THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS -- Friday, November 24, 196 1 32 Paray Given ZOD Award Guest Editorial The Annual Balfour Event By JUDGE IRA G. KAUFMAN President, Zionist Organization of Detroit This editorial concerns itself with two courageous men — Lord Balfour whose proclamation of Jewish Statehood has been celebrated annually in Detroit by the Zionist Organization of Detroit for the past 29 years, and Maestro Paul Paray whose devotion to principles of liberty and conscience led him, during the Nazi occupa- tion of Paris, to secrete underground a substantial num- ber of those around him marked for destruction by the infamous Nazis. The dedication to ideals shown by each of these two men at a time when such action could very well have meant loss of - stature and even torture and destruction was of the highest type of courage. Learning and culture have been the hallmarks of the Jewish people since the beginnings of civilized man's history. Along with these attributes which derive from our abiding faith in the primacy of "The Book," there has been a third characteristic enforced upon us from without—persecution. So frequently has the Jew suf- fered the "stings and arrows" of outrageous fortune at the hands of a majority bent on torture and destruction that a veritable depth of despair has sometimes engulfed the whole people. It is at such times that there arise men blessed with pure goodness and courage who stand up as -did Lord Balfour and Maestro Paray and cause themselves to be counted by their -deeds of assistance and succor. All the more reason, then, why our people are urged to rally once again to the standard of the Zionist Orga- nization of Detroit. Overflowingly should we attend the annual Balfour Concert at the Ford Auditorium on Nov. 25 and listen to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra as conducted by Paray and embellished by the great singing voice of Jan Pierce. For thus we honor the memory of Lord Balfour; we give respect and warm affection to a great musician and humanitarian, Maestro Paray; we enjoy the outstand- ing Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Jan Pierce; and not least, we signalize our devotion to our own people, its learning, its culture and in effect we, ourselves, stand up and forthrightly in the tradition of .Balfour and Paray cause ourselves — each one of us — to be counted for Israel and for a better world.
