Addressing a large gathering
at Temple Beth El, Monday, in
the Temple Sisterhood series of
lectures, Norman Cousins, edi-
tor of Saturday Review, ana-
lyzed the threats of war to the
world in the present global un-
certainties and discussed tke
possibilities for peace.
"We have the power for
peace if enough of us get into
action," he said. Pointing to
the dangers that threaten man-
kind today, he said that he is
"a pessimist intellectually but
an optimist spiritually." •
Referring to the role of the
United Nations, Cousins said
that while the UN doesn't have
adequate powers to enforce a
decision, "the only 'shelter' we
can have is ,that the United
Nations should be workable."
He added that "the U.S. and
Russia cannot wage war, against
each other without waging war
against the human race."
At a press conference pre-
ceding his address, Cousins,
stating his views on the tragedy
that 'afflicted Jewry and on
the indifference that existed in
some quarters, said: "Israel has
proven that the will to live,
and the will to work and sac-
rifice, makes it possible to' hope -
for peace, even though six mil-
lion have perished." •
The next in the series of
Temple Beth El Sisterhood
'book reviews will be given next
Tuesday by Rabbi Nathan
Hershfield, of Temple Beth
Jacob, Pontiac.
