About 7,500 Jews served in
the opposing armies of the
Civil War. Six thousands Jews,
including 700 officers, fought
with the Union forces, while
1,500 fought with the Confeder-
ate Army. Eight of the Union
officers were generals.

Edward C. Levy, prominent
Michigan industrialist and
philanthropist, will be honored
at Yeshiva University's 75th an-
niversary dinner at the. Waldorf
Astoria Hotel, New. York, Sun
day, Abraham
Borman, chair-
man of the De-
troit Friends
of Yeshiva
University, an-
nounced.
The dinner,
the highlight
of the univer-
sity's nation-
wide celebra-
tion of its dia-
mond jubilee,
will be dedi-
cated to Dr.
Samuel Bel-
kin, president
E. C. Levy of the Univer-
sity, on the occasion of his 50th
birthday.
Levy is president of the
Edward C. Levy Slag Co., with
plants in Detroit, Dearborn,
Ecorse and Trenton, which sup-
plies the Metropolitan Detroit
area with the bulk- of its con-
struction aggregates. As presi-
dent of the National Slag As-
sociation, Levy has utilized his
abilities to aid in the economic
development of Israel, erecting
the largest construction aggre-
gates plant in the Middle East-.
there, and personally instruct-
ing Israeli . technicians in its
operation.
A leading supporter of the
Allied Jewish Campaign and
United Foundation in Detroit,
Levy was a charter contributor
to Sinai Hospital. He was a
Founder of the Technion in
Israel, and aids several Catho-
lic, Protestant and Negro move-
ments. He is a member of the
board of directors of United
Foundation, United Negro Col-
lege Fund and the Urban
League.
At Sunday's dinner, Levy
will be presented with a comb
memorative book containing
mementoes of the testimonial
accorded to him by the greater
Detroit Jewish community last
May.
