• Knesset OK's New Cabinet JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Isra- el's tenth coalition government was endorsed by theKnesset by a vote of 63 to 46 after several hours of sharp debate. Prime Minister David -Ben- Gurion presented a four-party coalition comprised of 16 Min- isters, 11 of them from Mapai, three frOm 'the National Reli- gious party and two from Ach- dut Avodah. The .fourth party, Poale Agudas Israel, the ultra- Orthodox religious workers party, was represented by a Deputy MiniStry. The' new coali- tion commands 68 of the 120 Knesset seats. Ben-Gurion retains the two posts of Premier and Defense Minister. Levi Eshkol remains Finance Minister. Mrs. Golda Meir retains the post of Foreign Minister; Abba Eban, the Edu- cational and Culture Ministry, Moshe Dayan, the Agriculture Ministry; Pinhas Sapir was re- named to the Ministry of Com- merce and Industry, and Bihor Shitreet, to Police. Giora Josepthal, former La- bor Minister, was named De- velopment Minister; Dov Jos- eph, Justice Minister; Yosef Almogi, Minister without Port- folio; Eliyahu Sassoon, Minister of Posts and Telegraph; Moshe Shapiro, Minister of the Inter- ior and Health; Josepf Burg, Social Welfare; Zorach War- haftig, Religious Affairs. The two Achdut Avodah portfolios are Communications, to Yitzhak Benaharon, and Labor to Yigal Alan. Shapiro was given the Health portfolio on a temporary basis, the post being held for Mapam, should that party change its mind and decide to join the coalition. Three Deputy Ministers are Shimon Peres, of Mapai; Yitz- hak Rafael, of the National Re- ligious Party, and Kalman Ka- bane, of Poale Agudas Israel. The appointment of Sassoon was a concession to Sefardi de- mands for greater representa- tion. Shitreet also is a Sefardi. Mr. Sassoon who has been serv- ing as Minister to Switzerland, has the record of the longest diplomatic service since Israel Was established. He • previously represented Israel in Turkey and later in Italy. The new coalition is the ninth under Ben-Gurion as Premier. Moshe Sharett was Prime Min- ister for the 'other coalition. It differs from the prior govern- ment by the absence of Mapam -and the presence of Poale Agu- das Israel. The Progressive party and the General Zionists, now merged into the Liberal Party, are not represented in the new government. Fishing Debut in Atlantic Made by New Israel Trawler Fishing in Atlantic waters for the first time with a newly ac- quired trawler has brought Israel close to its goal of reach- ing self-sufficiency in supplying all local fish demand of some 20,000 tons annually by 1962. Currently Israel produces about 8,000 tons of pond-bred fish, while deep-sea fishing in other than Atlantic waters yields about 5,000 tons annually, and the balance is being imported. The fishing trawler, bearing the Biblical name Azgad and flying the Israel flag, was pur- chased and outfitted in Norway with capital provided by private Canadian and Israel interests in partnership with Rassco Rural and Suburban Settlement Co. Power and sailboats may be rented, with or without crews, for one day or an entire season. • Ravitz Elected to City Council Firm to Compensate Jews Who Worked as Slave Laborers FRANKFURT, (JTA) — About 5,000 Jews who had worked as forced laborers, dur- ing the Hitler regime, in the I. G. Farben factories, have received compensation totaling approximately 22,000,000 marks ($5,500,000), it was announced by the Compensation Trust, a subsidiary of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against' Germany. The Trust is the agency commissioned by . the Confer- ence adjudicate claims against I. G. Farben resulting 'from an agreement by the big West German industrial complex to compensate Jews impressed into service during World War II. A total of 9,800 claims for compensation as a result ; of this agreement have been filed, Trust officials told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, all but,- m 300 of the claims "did not meet.. the requirements of the agree- ment." The officials said that 1,500 cases are still being processed, and there is avail- able about 5,000,000 marks ($1,250,000) to satisfy claims that might be approved. The Trust is aided in its determination by an advisory board consisting of former Auschwitz concentration camp victims and former impressed I. G. Farben laborers living-• in Israel, the United States, Aus- tralia, and several European countries. Almost a third of the claimants are now residents of Israel, North America or coun- tries outside Europe. President of Rome Jewish Community to Lecture in U.S. . RO1VIE, (JTA) — Prof. Fausto Pitigliano, president of the Jew- ish Commimity of Rome, is leav- ing for a two-month visit to the United States during which he will lecture on the recent dis- covery at Ostia, the harbor of ancient Rome, of the remains of a monumental synagogue building believed to date back to between the fifth and second centuries before the Common Era. The discovery of the remains of the synagogue, believed to be the most ancient Jewish monu- ment in the world outside of Palestine, was announced last September by Chief Rabbi Elio Toaff. Physician Charged With Aiding in Nazi Murders KIEL, (JTA) — Proceedings that may lead to .a trial were ordered by the Circuit Court against Dr. Bruno Bourweig, a physician now employed by the West German Defense Ministry, on charges that, l during World War II, he aided Dr. Werner Heyde, the noted "euthanasia doctor." The latter is scheduled to go on trial at Limburg next February on charges of conduct- ing a program of "mercy kill- ings" for the Nazi regime. Dr. Bourweig is now em- ployed by the Defense Ministry at the Military Hospital Insti- tute at Freiburg. Previously, he was psychiatric adviser to the Social Court at Flensburg. He has also been employed as army personnel chief in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Austria to Aid Needy Victims - (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) VIENNA — Chancellor Alfons Gorbach announced in Parliament Wednesday that preparations had been completed to make advance compensation payments before Trans-Atlantic Traffic on El-Al Jumps 37% NEW YORK, (JTA)—Trans- Atlantic traffic carried by El Al Israel Airlines during the first six months, of 1961 rose 37' per cent over the same period in 1960, the airline announced. This compares with an over- all increase in trans-Atlantic air passengers of 10 per cent for same period. The increase in passengers combined with a 34.5 per cent rise in seating capacity, brought El Al's pay- load for the first half of 1961 to 59.1 per cent, the highest load factor for trans-Atlantic' flights of any airline. El Al carried 17,074 passen- gers in and out of New York's International Airport during the period reported, compared with 12,453 for the first six months of 1960. The introduction of Boeing 707 jet flights and the expan- sion of the trans-Atlantic sched- ule to eight, round trip flights per week brought the airline's seating capacity to 29,000, a 34.5 per cent increase over the 21,510 seats -available during the first half of last year.
