Bulgaria's Chief Rabbi Reported Arrested

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—Bulgaria's
Chief Rabbi, Dr. Asher Hanna-
nel, was arrested by Bulgarian
authorities several weeks ago,
according to reports just reach-
ing here.
The Bulgarian embassy here
refused to confirm or deny the
reports of the arrest.
The Chief Rabbi's arrest was
confirmed indirectly at Sofia
when the Bulgarian undersecre-
tary for religious affairs attended
services at the Synago
the High Holy Days.
He was asked about Rabbi
nanel's absence fro
and replied: "I d
the charges agai
e, but
you may rely on
justice of
the Bulgarian courts."
Rabbi Hannanel is a promi-

nent figure of Bulgaria. He was
active in the Bulgarian Academy
of Sciences, and, the author of
many works, including a compre-
hensive history of Bulgarian
Jewry. He visited Israel last year
and, at that time, hailed the Bul- -
gerian attitude toward the Jews
in that country.

Pay Tribute to Danes
for Rescuing Jeivs

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

JERUSALEM — Special serv-
ices Tuesday night atop Mount
Zion marked the anniversary of
October, 1943 — honoring the
king of Denmark and the Danish
people for their rescue of the
Jews of Denmark when the latter
were threatened by the Nazis
with deportation to death camps.
Under the leadership of their
king, the people of Denmark
undertook a vast rescue opera-
tion in . October, 1943, after
Danish authorities learned that
the German Army was planning
to start, deporting Jews.
By night, Danes mobilized
fleets of ships and boats and
ferried the Jews to neutral
Sweden. Nearly the entire Jew-
ish population of Denmark was
saved through this dramatic op-
eration.
The services on Mount Zion
recalled the Danish king's action
and his people's support of the
large scale anti-Nazi operation.
