Arranged Marriages Praised
By Rabbi in BBYO Pamphlet

A Conservative rabbi has
praise for marriages arranged
by parents — a custom usually
associated with the Old Coun-
try.
Rabbi Stanley Rabinowitz, of
Washington, D. C., asserts that
the stability of home life in
societies where parents choose
their children's mates can best
be appreciated when viewing
today's climbing, divorce fi-
gures.
. Writing in a pamphlet, "A
Jewish View of Love and Mar-
riage," sixth in a series of Ju-
daism publications produced by
the Bnai Brith Youth Organiza-
tion, he admits "it is not likely
we would give up the freedom
our culture alloWs in marriage."-

Koenigsberg to Address
Farband Branch

As a compromise solution, he
argues that youngsters "must
receive from early childhood an
attitude toward marriage that
will encourage them to seek
their parents' counsel of their
own free will and to select
mates who will reflect the fam-
ily pattern."
He traces the increasing rate
of intermarriages to the open
democratic society where "it is
inevitable that people of dif-
ferent religions should fall in
love."
But such couples find that
love cannot conquer all, he
warns, adding: "Marriage has
many challenges and hazards
and requires delicate adjust-
ments. Where there is a religi-
ous difference, there is an addi-
tional serious difficult hurdle
to overcome."
