A national code of professional
practices designed to assist Jew-
ish communities to develop pro-
fessional standards of teacher em-
ployment in religious schools was
approved Monday at a meeting
of the board of governors of the
American Association for Jewish
Education.
The principles and recommen-
dations of the code, completed
after two years of study and re-
search by the AAJE's national
committee on teacher education
and welfare, will serve to guide
school administrations in areas
of placement, teacher duties, ten-
ure and work schedules.
It also proposes policies relat-
ing to - salary and national stand-
ards for vacations and leaves,
retirement and fringe benefits
and settlement of controversies.
A special section of the code
addresses itself to ethical prac-
tices for Jewish , teachers, 9,000
of whom are currently serving
Jewish schools in this country
and Canada.
Other projects to improve the
status of the Jewish education
profession formulated by AAJE
include a national retirement and
life insurance program for Jew-
ish teachers, an annual Teacher's
Day celebration, designation and

Algerian Violence

WO 5-3000

PARIS, (JTA)—Grand Rabbi
Jacob Kaplan condemned Alger-
ian violence which, he said, con-
stituted a_ "physical and moral
outrage against the human per-
sonality, the respect for which
forms the basis of civilized
society."
In a statement issued on be-
half of the French Rabbinate,
Rabbi Kaplan said "no durable
solution can be found by force
and violence." Rabbi Kaplan's
home was damaged last month
when followers of the OAS, the
Algerian-French right-wing under-
ground organization, planted a
bomb in his building.
