Denver Rabbi Urges
`Proper' Sabbath
Programs in Center

DENVER, (JTA)—A leading
Reform rabbi, expressing the
hope that Denver Jewry could
avoid a clash over Sabbath pro-
gramming in the new Denver
Jewish Community Center, said
that a small group of religious
extremists should not be allowed
to impoie their will on the total
community by forcing centers to
be closed on Saturdays.
Rabbi Earl Stone, making the
first public comment in Denver
on an issue which has aroused
sharp controversy in other Jewish
communities, said he favored
opening the Denver center on
Saturdays "in 'the spirit and
atmosphere of the Jewish Sab-
bath."
Discussing the argument that
the cenfer should be closed
because young people should be
in the synagogue on the Sab-
bath, Rabbi Stone said' Jewish
young people on the Sabbath
could be found "hanging around
the drug stores, going clown-
town to shop and to the movies."
He said it would be better for
them to be at the Jewish center
"participating in Sabbath cul-
- tural and leisure time activi-
ties."
He pointed out that JeWish
center programming had added
Jewish content over the years
because Jewish center workers
themselves have undergone a
change in outlook from the one-
time group worker who had no
Jewish values. •
