`Na Retirement' Adolph Deutsch
Declares on His 80th Birthday

"No talk about retirement," is
the only stipulation Adolph
Deutsch made in yielding to his
family this week to permit a
dinner honoring him on his 80th
birthday..
Becoming an octogenarian,
Mr. Deutsch, president of Amer-
ican Savings, the local savings
association With assets exceed-

"Very few people have let me
down," he said.
There's no secret behind the
success formula of this fair-
minded keeper of public trust
and confidence. "Work, work,
work," he said. "I like to work."
DeutSch arrived in New York
from Hungary in 1900. "I first
worked as a messenger boy for
$5 a week," he recalls.. The fol-
lowing years saw him in Detroit.
He worked his way up to a
branch manager of the old
Detroit Bank, quit this job to
establish an investment com-
pany in the National Bank
Building and later he founded
Citizens Mortgage Company.
He married a pretty Hungar-
ian girl, Erzsi, now 71, and
raised three sons. Alfred is
executive vice-president of
American Savings, and Charles
is a director. A third son, Lt.
(j.g.) Robert Deutsch, died
during World War II. Deutsch
boasts seven grandchildren.

ADOLPH DEUTSCH

ing $115,000,000, observed his
important milestone by follow-
ing his recommendation to his
contemporaries—by working.
He offered this advice to
"youngsters nearing 80": "Find
some-thing to do and work, work,
work," and to refuse to be "put
out to pasture."
Through diligence and work,
Deutsch was- in comfortable cir-
cumstances by the time he
reached 65. But he dreaded even
the mere thought of retiring. So,
at the time of life when most
men are told that it's "time to
take it easy," he embarked on a
new venture which turned out
to be the most successful of his
entire life. He felt that people-
would be in need of more homes
—that they would need money
to build or buy these homes.
In 1947 he founded Amer-
ican Savings in a small office
at Dexter and Cortland. A
self-proclaimed enemy of a
tight money market, Deutsch'
believed in loaning money
when it is hard to get. -
In doing this, he leaned more
on the integrity of the indivi-
dual than he did on collateral.
