GREENWICH, Conn.—The Connecticut Commission on Civil
Rights last 'week ordered Mrs. Olive Branden, a real estate
broker, to "cease and desist" a practice of discrimination against
Jewish home buyers, after it was disclosed earlier that she had
prepared a memorandum to her staff on how to detect and avoid
Jewish buyers.
NEW YORK—Daniel Mayer, French political leader and
chairman of the World Union executive committee, said here last
week that the solidarity of American Jewry, patterned on a kind
of "communal Marshall Plan" was the decisive factor in the
reconstruction of thte.surviving Jewish communities of Western
Europe . . . An advisory board of prominent American bankers
and businessmen has been established here to guide the policies
of the New York branch of the Bank Leumi-le-Israel and its
representative office in Los Angeles which was opened last week,
it was announced by Dr.-Y. Foerder, chairman of the bank .. .
Bnai Brith's helpfulness to Jewish life was emphasized here by
Philip M. Klutznick, former national president of the group and
member of the U.S. delegation to the United Nations, before
the Metropolitan Council of Bnai Brith Conference this week
. . . Faculty members of over 100 schools of medicine, dentistry
and osteopathy attended an all day conference here this week
of coordinators of cancer teaching, at the Albert Einstein College
of Medicine of Yeshiva University . • . Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz,
vice president of the Israel Bond Organization, left for Europe
Sunday to confer with European Jewish leaders on a program
of accelerated activity in 1962 to provide increased funds for
Israel's economic development . . . The new $1,250,000 Edward
Neimeth Institute for Medical Research of Maimonides Hospital
was dedicated here this week in the presence of city officials
and prominent community leaders.
BOSTON—A gift of $150,000 has been made by members
of the Riesman family to the Beth Israel Hospital Developmen
Program, and it-was disclosed that a new medical lecture hal
and an expanded dental clinic will be dedicated to the family i
appreciation of its efforts in behalf of the hospital.
LOS ANGELES—The $2 million Jewish Federation-Counci
Gateways Hospital was dedicated here by Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt
who flew from New York to speak at the affair . . . The 30th
annual conference of the Jewish National Fund of the Greater
Western area concluded here Sunday after electing Benjamin
H. Swig area president, and adopting a $11/2 million goal.
WEST ORANGE, N.J.—The Kessler Institute for Rehabilita-
tion here has dedicated a new one million dollar in-patient wing,
containing a therepeutic swimming pool and 48 beds, in con-
junction with the Institute's 12th annual meeting.
GARY, Ind. An agreement between the Jewish Federation
here and the Chicago _Jewish Family and Community Service
by which counseling is provided by the Chicago agency to
families in the areas outside Chicago is growing in value to
such families, the federation announced this week.
STORRS, Conn.—The Hillel Foundation at the University of
Connecticut announced this week that it is organizing ,a club
to provide social and cultural programs to unmarried Jewish
graduate students and faculty.
CHICAGO—Ground has been broken for five new buildings
at the Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center as part of a
$16 million expansion program previously announced by the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago.
WORCESTER, Mass.—A large majority of thte 380 Jewish
families in - Worcester polled in a survey sponsored by the
Jewish Welfare Federation said they agreed the community
needed a new community center and they would support such
a project . . . Temple Sinai, newest reform congregation here.,
has announced plans to purchase a 42 acre estate with a 16
room colonial residence to serve as a sanctuary and school
facilities 'for the temple.
PHILADELPHIA—The United Nations and Women's Ameri-
