Greenberg Replaces Thurgood Marshall as NAACP Legal Chief

Jack Greenberg, 36-year-old
New York Jewish attorney who
recently replaced Thurgood
Marshall as general counsel of
the National Association for the
Advancement of Colored Peo-
ple, happily accepted a job as
assistant counsel in the organi-
zation 12 years ago, because he
regarded civil rights as one of
the exciting frontiers of law-
making.
When the Supreme Court
heard final arguments on the
constitutionality of racial segre-
gation in the public schools late
in 1952, Greenberg was the only
lawyer presenting the cases
who was not a Negro. Friends
of Greenberg say that he is
often not even aware that he
is the only white man in a
group of Negroes.

United States-Israel Trade Rises

NEW YORK, (JTA)—Trade
between the United States and
Israel, which reached an all-
time high in 1960, increased
by more than 16 per cent in
the first half of 1961 compared
with the same period last year,
the American-Israel Chamber
of Commerce and Industry re-
ported.
Data from official United
States statistics showed that
two-way trade in the first six
months of this year totaled
$84,524,400. The figure for the
first six months of 1960 was
$72,773,600.
Total United States exports
to Israel in the first six months
of this year was $67,888,400,
compared with $60,159,300 in
the same - period last year.
United States imports from Is-
rael totaled $16,636,000 in the
first six months of 1961, com-
pared with $12,615,300 in the
same period in 1960..
The Chamber reported that

Greenberg acquired his taste
for legal rights early in life.
He was expelled from a New
York public school as a young-
ster for addressing a teacher by
h i s nickname, "Schwartzie."
Discipline was due, but Green-
berg insists he was punished
too harshly, and he never for-
got that he was not given a fair
hearing.
He first became involved
with the NAACP as a student
at the Columbia University Law
School, where he was graduated
in 1948 as a Harlan Fiske Stone
Scholar.
Significant issues he has
worked on include cases that
