JWY Charged with Exaggerating
Reports on Nazi Group in Chicago

CHICAGO, (JTA)—An asser-
tion by an agent for the Jewish
War Veterans that there were
75 to 100 "hard core" Nazis liv-
ing in Chicago was strongly
contradicted by the Anti-Defa-
mation League midwest office
and the Chicago Police Security
section.
Herman Hornsby, the JWV
informant, told a city-wide press
conference that he had found
a large active Nazi front under
the name of "Fighting American
Nationalists." He said the group
distributed most of its literature
to students in Chicago high
schools.
Police Sergeant Burton Lovely
of the Security Section, calling
Hornsby's report "greatly exag-
gerated," -said that "no more
than five or six Nazis are known
in this area." William Pinsley,
ADL Midwest director of Fact-
Finding, estimated that six to ten
Nazis were busy in the Chicago
area. He also declared that Horns-
by had "completely exaggerated"
the situation.

Israel Gives
Tanganyika Aid
with Scholarships

DAR ES SALAAM, Tangan-
yika, (JTA)—Israel has agreed
to send a staff of five experts
to Tanganyika to help establish
a youth training center based on
the kibbutz system, Rashidi Ka-
wawa, minister without portfolio,
announced on his return from
an eight-day visit to Israel.
The Tanganyika official, who
was a guest of the Israel govern-
ment, said the experts were due
at the end of October for Pre-
liminary talks. The center; where
about 30 African youths will be
trained in cooperative and farm-
ing project method§, will be
opened on Tanganyika's indepen-
dence day, Dec. 9. The experts
will also teach trade union pro-
cedures. -
The official also reported that
Israel has offered AO scholarships'
to Tanganyika trade union lead-
ers, farm organization officials
and cooperative societies _mem-
bers to visit Israel for three
weeks to study aspects of Israeli
cooperative and farming tech-
niques as well as trade union
methods. The scholarship holders
will leave for Israel Oct. 21.
Other Israeli assistance in-
cludes 12 scholarships for four
months of study starting in
January in Israel for leadership
training and an unlimited num-
ber of scholarships, for use start-
ing in 1962, in such subjects as
irrigation, agriculture, engineer-.
ing and medicine. The entire
cost of the scholarships is being
covered by the Israel govern-
ment, the official said.

`King of Kings' Opens

Nov. 2 at United Artists
Jeffery Hunter, in his most
difficult role, portrays Christ in
MGM's "King of Kings," opening
Nov. 2 at the United Artists
Theater.
Others in the cast include
Siobhan McKenna as _Mary,
Gerard Tichy as Joseph, Robert
Ryan as John the Baptist and
Rip Torn as Judas.
Outstanding scholars of sev-
eral faiths were advisors during
the movie's production.
Hebrew University author-
ities in Jerusalem checked the
movie scripts for historical ac-
curacies, the producers report.

Oscar Shabat, director of hu-
man relations for the Chicago
Board of Education, reported
that an investigation of the
schools mentioned by Hornsby
had failed to uncover any new
evidence of Nazi infiltration. He
said that several weeks ago, one
boy at the Prosser high school
aroused the wrath of fellow stu-
dents by trying to distribute
Nazi literature.
• The ADL official criticized the
Jewish War Veterans for making
the Nazi group front page news.
He said that while the group did
exist, "they are operating on a
shoe string and their members
have considerable inability to
promote anything approaching a
serious mass movement."
The Sentinel of Chicago, in-
an editorial by J. L. Fishbein,
its editor, also denounced the
Jewish War Veterans. "We defy
the Jewish War Veterans to pre-
sent their story before any corn-
petent committee of community
leaders, including our law en-
forcement and Jewish defense
agencies," Fishbein wrote. He
challenged the JWV to deny the
truth of the charges by the ADL
and the Chicago police that the
JWV had exaggerated the signi-
ficance of Nazi activities in the
Chicago area.
