In Memoriam
In loving memory of our dear-
ly beloved parents and grand-
parents, Max Moss, who passed
away Oct. 16, 1954 (19 days in
Tishri), and Charlotte Moss, who
left us on Oct. 18, 1955 (two
days in Heshvan). Sadly missed
by their children and grandchil-
dren.

DETROIT
Dr. Moshe Smoira, Israel's
first Chief Justice, died in Jeru-
salem Sunday. He was 73.
Smoira presided over the Su-
preme Court from its 1948 es-
tablishments until 1954, when
he retired because of poor
health.
Born in Germany, Smoira
studied at the universities of
Gonigsberg, Munich, Giessen,
Heidelberg and Frankfort.
He was wounded when he
served in the Kaiser's artillery
on the Russian front.
In 1923, he moved to Pales-
tine, where he lectured at Jeru-
salem law classes and practiced
privately.
He is survived by his wife
and two married daughters.

NEW YORK, (JTA) — Max
Weber, a Russian-born Jewish
painter who became one of the
pioneers of modern art in the
United States, died Oct. 4 at
his home in Great Neck, N.Y.
He was . 80.
His paintings on Hebraic
themes, landscapes and abstrac-
tions have been exhibited in
art galleries a n d museums
throughout the world and won
him numerous art awards. His
early work was criticized severe-
ly and it was not until he was
60 that he was able to support
himself and his family from his
painting.
Born in Bialystok in 1881, the
son of a tailor, Weber was
brought to the United States by
his family when he was 10. He
studied art at Pratt Institute
and later taught in schools in
Virginia and Minnesota before
sailing for Paris at the age of
24 for several years of study
under Matisse and other mod-
ernists.
