Opera Based on Yemenite Tale Will
Urges Solidarity at Canada Convention Make National TV Debut Sunday

By HARVEY ZUCKERBERG
The three-day 25th regional
convention of the Zionist Or-
ganization of Canada, Central
Division (Ontario), was ended
Sunday night with a call for
solidarity of Zionists in the
face of increasing strife in the
Middle East and internal dis-
sensions.
The plea was issued by Rabbi
Dr. Joseph P. Sternstein, na-
tional vice president of the
Zionist Organization of Ameri-
ca, at the parley's Israel Bar
Mitzvah Celebration Banquet at
the Windsor Jewish Center.
(Dr. Sternstein, spiritual lead-
er of a congregation in Dayton,
Ohio, will move to New York
to assume duties as national
executive director of the Jewish
National Fund of America by
Jan. 2.)
Dr. Sternstein assailed the
critics of Zionism, with spe-
cial reference to Israel Prime
Minister David Ben - Gurion
for throwing "shafts a n
barbs at the Zionist •Move.-
ment." He termed Ben-Gur-
ion's criticism "unjustifiably
detrimental."
Said Dr. Sternstein: "Zionism
is not the exclusive property of
Israel. The role of Zionism is
important to the identity —
ideological, political and spiri-
tual — and solidarity of the
American Jew. Zionism is es-
sential to the maturation of the
American Jew. The most impor-
tant friend Israel has is a
mobilized Zionist constituency.
"To whittle away at and speak
against Zionists is historic folly.
The task of Zionism is to re-
main mobilized and strength-
ened."
Dr. Sternstein deplored U.S.

policy on the Middle EaSt, which
he described as "accommodat-
ing" to the Arabs. Specifically,
he cited a recent television in-
terview between United Arab
Republic chief Nasser and U.S.
Sen. J. W. Fulbright (D-Ark.),
in which the senator's accept-
ance of the Arab boss he
deemed beyond the limits of
diplomatic necessity.
On the home front, Dr.
Sternstein also deplored the
fact that "Israel is not rele-
vant to the average American
Jew." He said:
"Zionism is the catalyst of
American Jewry. Jewishness is
not only to be related to re-
ligion alone. There is a lack of
concern for 'Jewish people'—
an ideological vacuum.
"Only the Zionist Movement
is concerned with the relation-
ship of American Jews to Israel.
Without the indisoluble knot of
Jewish peoplehood the world
over—its link to Israel—Juda-
ism is in peril."
Delegates to the Canadian
Zionist convention in earlier
sessions adopted a number of
resolutions, chief of which
were a plea for increased giv-
ing to aid Israel in the re-
habilitation and resettlement
of immigrants, and full sup-
port to Jewish National Fund
programs, investments in Is-
rael and State of Israel Bonds.
Other resolutions adopted
were:
1. That the convention recom-
mend that the Zionist Organi-
zation of Canada conduct a
study as to the advisability of
establishing a Canadian sum-
mer camp for youth in Israel
and, also, a Zionist summer
school camp, and that a second
camp be established for the
Young Judea division.
2. That the convention recom-
mend that the Central Division
appoint a special committee to
explore the possibilities of in-
troducing Hebrew as a subject
in the curriculum of one or
more public secondary schools
in metropolitan Toronto.
3. That delegates adopt a pro-
gram of Hebrew education for
adults through the facilities of
the Keren Hatarbut.

Mayor Proclaims
October as JWVA.
Membership Month

Mayor Louis C. Miriani has
proclaimed the month of Oc-
tober as "JWVA Membership
Month."
In a formal proclamation pre-
sented to Mrs. Esther Feld,
Department president, and Mrs.
Sam Skupsky, junior vice pres-
ident and membership chair-
man, the mayor congratulated
Michigan's Jewish War Veter-
an's Auxiliary on its service
record and wished it success
in the current campaign for
membership.
The Michigan Department in-
cludes 13 local auxiliaries and
one in Flint. Traditionally, Oc-
tober is set aside as the month
to recruit new members. Each
auxiliary holds its own party,
tea, or dinner to promote ac-
tive participation in JWVA's
program.
Membership in JWVA is open
to the mothers, wives, sisters,
daughters and grand daughters
of Jewish war veterans. Fur-
ther information may be obtain-
ed by calling Mrs. Skupsky,
KE 4-3529. or the JWV Home,
WE 3-0846.

4. To provide for the study
of Zionist theory and the
problems of Jewish life, and
to urge the appointment of
representatives of the Zionist
Organization to boards of edu-
cation of all Hebrew and Jew-
ish schools. (All members of

Zionist Organization were
urged, also, to make every
effort to acquire a knowledge
of, and to employ the Hebrew
language.)
5. That consideration be given
to the establishment of an an-
nual adult seminar on Zionist
problems, beginning in 1962.
6. That the government of
Israel and the Jewish Agency
take the following practical
measures to facilitate the aliyah
of Canadians who wish to settle
in Israel: a. Special legislation
for the absorption of Canadian
immigrants, according them at
least the same facilities as those
offered to approved foreign in-
vestors; b. Exempt new Canadi-
an immigrants to Israel from
fiscal taxes on import of their
property, including import of
goods for their business — raw
material, equipment, etc. — for
a stated length of time; c. To
provide loans to finance the
absorption of new immigrants
to Israel.
In other business, the Cen-
tral Division of the Zionist
Organization of Canada elect-
ed Julius Hayman, editor and
publisher of the Toronto Jew-
ish Standard, - as president of
a new slate of officers. He
succeeds David Peters.
Vice presidents are I. B.
Weinstein, budget and finance;
