Art Collection to
Northwood Institute

An art collection numbering
59 pieces of original art has
been given Northwood Insti-
tute, Alma, Mich., by Mrs. Max-
ine Levin of Detroit in memory
of her husband, Hoke Levin, it
was announced today.
Levin was a well-known busi-
ness and civic leader here until
his recent death. The former
.owner of the Highland Park
Furniture Company, he was also
president of Hadley Investment
Company. He was active in nu-
merous Jewish -organizations
and served as a delegate to the
White House Conference on
Youth. His interests also includ-
ed the arts and over a period of
years he demonstrated this in-
terest as a patron and personal-
ly developed a valuable art col-
lection.
Mrs. Levin is a talented artist
who has studied in Europe as
well as in the United States. She
has exhibited paintings in Chi-
cago, Detroit, Indiana Pennsyl-
vania, and in other parts of the
country at regional, national,
and international exhibitions.
She is planning to study this
year with Zubel Kachadoorian
in Italy.
The Levin-Art Collection in-
cludes several paintings by Mrs.
Levin, as well as many others
which she and Mr. Levin ac-
quired. It includes the work of
29 artists such as: Zubel Kacha-
doorian, Frances deErdely,
Charles Culver, Hugo DeSoto,
Renoir, Picasso, and Pissaro.
The varied collection ranges
from paintings such as "The
Church is the Union Hall" by
Ben Shahn, to oils, watercolors,
lithographs, temperas, pencil
drawings and woodcarvings such
as "Seated Sisters" by Walter
Midener.
The value of the collection
received to date is estimated at
over $25,000. Some of the paint-
ings are presently on display in
the R. B. Smith Building and
the institution is planning an
exhibition for the display of the
entire collection.
Mrs. Levin, for a number of
years, was •art editor for The
Jewish News.
