Jail Westport Man
for Spreading Hate

WESTPORT, Conn., (JTA) —
Alan F. P. Moyler, a 35-year-old
freelance commercial artist liv-
ing near Westport, is under -$11,-
000 bail after being arrested and
arraigned on 16 separate charges
of violating Federal and state
laws by spreading and mailing
anti-Semitic propaganda.
According to police, Moyler has
been, for three years, mailing
anti-Semitic materials, scribbling
slogans in telephone booths and
other public places, and sending
dead rats in the mails to Jews in
this area. Government handwrit-
ing experts traced the offensive
materials to Moyler, police au-
thorities said.
He has posted a $5,000 bond
for trial in the U.S. District Court
at New Haven, and is under an-
other bond, of $6,000, awaiting
a hearing in Circuit Court here
on Oct. 3. Moyler told police he
is a British subject born in China.

Refuse Bail for Israeli
Held in Child Kidnap

LONDON, (JTA) —Magistrate
Bertram Reece again refused an
application to set bail for Shalom
Schtarks, the 22-year-old Israeli
teacher, who is being held in jail
here on the application of the
Israel government for his extra-
dition.
The religious school teacher is
accused by ISrael of hiding,
"somewhere in England," 11-
year - old Yossele Schumacher.
That boy had been abducted from
his parents in Israel, who feared
he would not receive an Ortho-
dox Hebrew education.
The court remanded Schtarks
for another hearing, scheduled
for Thursday. His counsel insists
that he does not know where the
child is. Leonard Caplin, an at-
torney for the Israel government
in the extradition request, told
the court that the Schtarks de-
fense is "drawing • a procession
of red herrings" across the miss-
ing boy's trail.

The Chuppah

The term "Chuppah" is used
to denote the bridal canopy un-
der which the traditional mar-
riage ceremony is performed. The
term itself comes from a Hebrew
verb meaning "to cover." The
consummation of a marriage was
referred to as the "Chuppah."
Technically, some considered this
to be the veil which covered"
the bride's head and face. It is
for this reason that it is still the
custom for the groom to veil tke
bride, since this veiling indicates
a sense of belonging. Others con-
sidered the effect of Chuppah to
come when the groom spread his
cloak or Tallit over the bride.
For this reason it is still custom-
ary for the bride to buy a Tallit
for the groom—referring to the
Tallit which was spread for her,
or later over the two of them,
to indicate a sense of belonging
together. A third contention is
that it refers to the marriage
canopy, while a fourth conten-
tion indicates that the real
"Chuppah" is the final act of the
marriage when bride and groom
are ushered into a room to be
together ("Yichud"). This being
together is actually the final rea-
lization of being together and
belonging.
