chestra under the baton of the
celebrated maestro Paul Paray.
Rabbi Leon Fram, the guest
speaker, pointed out that both
artists—Peerce and Paray sym-
bolized America's hallowed tra-
dition of freedom and decency.
He said Peerce exemplified
America's equality of opportu-
nity and gave expression to
Jewish contributions to Ameri-
can arts and letters, and he
called Paray a great humani-
tarian and staunch friend of
Jewry, apart from being a great
artist. He referred to Paray's
refusal to divulge to Nazi auth-
orities in France the names of
the Jewishs musicians playing
with the Concerts Cologne and
his subsequent flight from
France to avoid Nazi retribu-
tion. While directing the Opera
of Monte Carlo, following his
flight from Paris, Paray offered
shelter and encouragement to
Jewish refugee musicians on
their long trek to Israel and
America.
When the Israel Philhar-
monic was in its infancy, Paray
went to -Palestine to help launch
and develop it into a great mu-
cal organization.
ichard B. Kramer, Balfour
ert chairman, called upon
ewish community of De-
