Arab-Jewish Clashes Create New A (Continued from Page 1) came general. In the evening, the Arabs were chased from the mellah by the Jewish com- mandos and French security police. The largest number of casualties occured when police had to open fire on the Arabs when the latter began throw- ing grenades to cover their re- treat. After a quiet night, Oran resi- dents awoke to find firemen still fighting the blazes burning from the previous day and steel- helmeted soldiers patrolling the streets. Early in the morning on Tuesday, the A r a b s showed they were determined to open new hostilities. A '7 a.m., a European was murdered in cold blood and two hours later a group of 50 Arabs broke into a Jewish pharmacy which they ransacked. They then tried to storm into defense positions. Younger Jewish children, their nerves on edge, stormed Arab shops in the Jewish quar- ter, breaking into a number of them. Meanwhile, Arabs massed again in alleys leading to th mellah, again shouting "Death to the Jews" and "Algeria for Moslems." Arab women hurled bottles and stones at the mellah as Arab attackers tried to enter the Jewish section. In one such attack an Arab was captured and killed by the Jewish de- fenders. Despite - cries of "French Al- geria" from the Jewish fighters, Jewish community spokesmen emphatically denied there was any connection between the Jewish self-defense program and the French OAS background movement in Algeria. Speaking on the radio, a spokesman said the events were caused entirely by Arab provocation .and he denied that the Jewish counter- action had any political back- ground. An eyewitness told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that he saw many Jewish fam- ilies pushing their belongings and furniture in hand carts as they left their homes in the Arab sector for the mel- lah. Jewish community work- ers organized temporary relief facilities for the refugees near the central synagogue. Other Jews were reported leaving Oran for emigration to France or Israel. • the Jews come we will how to receive them." As in a Pennsylvania case validated by the United States Supreme Court in May, the re- ligious angle was discounted as a basis for current blue laws. Said the Virginia court on the point: "While it is true that the first Sunday laws were motivated by religious forces .. . they have undergone such changes in Virginia and other states that they can no longer be considered as retaining any semblence of religious char- acter. The evidence shows that the amended Sunday law was 13onsOred by the Virginia Re- tail Merchants Association to provide for a day of rest . . . and not as a day for required religious observance." "Chinese Literature," a Pe- king periodical which discussed the publication of the new translation reported that some of the works were read by the Chinese Youth Art Theatre to mark the recent centenary of the Yiddish writer's birth. The literary magazine, which gave the writer's name as "Sh. Aleichem," was informed of the meaning of the expression "Sholom Aleichem," by Dov Noy, director of the Ha if a Ethnological Museum, and in a letter of reply they promised to rectify the mistake, made "through ignorance." a. rc CD 5 ar CD vt CH OUR WINDOWS FOR WEEKLY SPECIALS!
