• • • With a Sound of Horns • • • 7 The Priestly Blessing 9 By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX DETROIT INSTITUTE OF MUSICAL ART (Copyright, 1960, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) Instruction in All Instruments and Voice — Opera Workshop Speech and Theatre Arts — Ballet Piano Teacher Training Program Piano Classes for Children 4 to 6 Years The priestly blessing is pro- nounced by the priests in the synagogue only on holidays. Originally, the priestly bless- ing was a part of the service in the Temple every day. As a mat- ter of fact, even though the priests do not pronounce it, it is incorporated as part of the liturgy chanted by the cantor every day in the morning syna- gogue service. Many places in Israel today do not have the priests ascend the pulpit to pro- nounce the priestly blessings. Some claim that the reason this practice has been restricted to holidays only is that it is only on the holidays when a real festive spirit prevails in . the synagogue, while on other days many mundane matters press on our minds (even on the Sab- bath). The priestly blessing re- quired a real festive mood, and thus could not be uttered in the Diaspora except on a holiday. In Israel, the spirit of the land contains some mood of festivity every day. Some authorities claim that the long form was removed during the year be- cause it was burdensome to the congregation. The age of chivalry is never past so long as there is a wrong left un-redressed on earth. —Charles Kingsley Happy New Year MERRILL PHARMACY 15600 Puritan BR 3-3390 5330 - 50 JOHN R (Art Centre) — TEmple 1 - 2870 Branches: East Side and Dearborn Member of the NatiOnal Association of Schools of Music Happy New • Year DUNK DONUT SHOPS Tender — Nutritious — Delicious 22914 Woodward, Ferndale 149 W. 6 Mile nr.
