Why, is it forbidden to remove

one seeks the blessing of the
Almighty further. A blessing can-
not come to a man who will have
nothing of his own to start with.
Removing the cloth and the bread
from the table leaves an empty
table and thus it becomes a table
which can receive no blessing.
* * *
Why is the knife removed from

the table before the grace is
recited?

Two reasons are offered for
this practice. First, is the Jewish
conception that the table is like
the altar of the Almighty. Just as
the altar is a place over which
no metal shall be raised (since
the altar is an instrument of
peace and metal is an instrument
of war), so - is it prohibited to
have the knife on the table when
saying the grace, since at the time
of grace it is the center of prayer
and most comparable to the altar.
Others claim that the reason for
this is because a strong devotee
of the Holy Land plunged the
knife', in his own heart when he
recited the portion of the grace
that deals with the rebuilding' of
Jerusalem; since his grief . over
the destruction of the Temple
was so strong. In order to avoid
such an occurrence, some claith
that the knife must be removed
from the table or covered during
the recital of grace.
