Professor Cohen Gets Tufts Medical Post Informal Citizens Committee Seeks Center Sabbath Program Solution; Rabbis Reject Negotiation Proced An informal citizens' commit- tee, selected by Max M. Fisher to work out an acceptable solu- tion in the controversy over Sabbath programming in the Jewish Community Center, this week reported progress in its efforts. Members of the committee expressed the hope that an agreement will be reached soon to end the differences which have resulted in the formation of a Committee for Center Sab- bath Closing. But the Detroit rabbinate, in a statement to The Jewish News on Tuesday, rejected the procedures of the citi- zens' committee, charging that the rabbis are being ignored in the negotiations. Acting as a committee for the rabbinate Rabbis Leizer Levine and Haskel .Grubner contended that this is the first time that all Detroit rabbis-32 in num- ber—and with only one ex- ception — had united on an issue, and they insisted that the rabbis should be con- sulted in negotiations and that the Center should be closed for a Saturday preced- ing a meeting with them to discuss plans for a com- promise. The informal citizens' com- mittee was named by Fisher not in his capacity as president of the Jewish Welfare Federa- tion, but as a public-spirited citizen who is anxious to pre- vent communal 'controversies that may harm the over-all com- me munity efforts of explained. the committ the committ Serving Berman, - Judg are: Ma evin, Phillip Stoll- Theodor braham Srer with man an Fisher and Mrs. Max . He said additional replies arrive daily. Rabbi Grubner, seeking to emphasize the urgency of the situation and to indicate th sincerity of the rabbis' effort said the rabbis are prepare to assist in furthering th Center's activities. As proof, h said that when funds no longer were available for a mashgiach to supervise the kashrut of the Center, rabbis assumed hash- gachah responsibility through personal visits daily at the Center's snack room, thereby evincing a desire to see to it that the Center functions prop- erly. Rabbi Grubner maintains that the very small number of people who had begun to use the Center's facilities on Satur- days is now drastically reduc- ing, and he expressed the view that the Center has nothing to lose from a concession to close on Saturdays until _ an agree- rnent is reached between the two contending groups. met w' repr Center d th commi an agr& ent A me said tha what to dictate ut that its program to reach the committe accord on a program that will obviate controversy and will prevent disruption of the corn- munity.'s ranks. "It is our hope to bring the two conflicting groups together," a spokesman for the .committee said. But the rabbis maintain that there can be no fusion of ideas, that there can not be any sort of unity, as a result of negotiations that would exclude them. I am equally convinced that there should be consideration also for the strong sentiments existing in the community; 2,500 of whose families now are sup- porting the stand of the com- mittee that opposes Sabbath programming. I therefore hope that whatever action will be taken to avert a community crisis will be put into effect immediately, and that the feel- ing of Sabbath observers will not be flaunted."
