BETH ABRAHAM SYNAGOGUE

The academic staff num-
bers 40 full and 67 part-time
teachers and lecturers, as
compared with a total of 24
in the university's first year.

A total of 69 of the 620 stu-
dents at the University hold
scholarships of one kind or an-
other. This compares with 25
to 30 per cent of the total en-
rollment who held scholarships
about three years ago and must
be taken as indicative of the
steadily widening appeal of Bar-
Ilan University among the gen-
eral public.
The main subjects selected
for study provide an interesting
sidelight on present educational
trends in Israel. During the cur-
rent year 125 students are tak-
ing Psychology as their major
subject; 96, Hebrew Literature;
76, Bible; 62, Chemistry, and
52, English, these five subjects
thus accounting for over two
thirds of the major subjects
taken. The preference for psy-
chology, in particular, reflects
the government's considerable
interest of late in special train-
ing for the counselling of teach-
ers and pupils in meeting their
problems—educational and vo:
cational.
A feature of the students' or-
ganization of Bar-Ilan Univer-
sity is to be seen in the volun-
tary teaching work done by the
students in the immigrants'
settlement of Kfar Ono, nearby.
The campus of Bar-Ilan Uni-
versity extends over an area of
about 45 acres, on the borders
of Ramat Gan, the Israel gar-
den city.

Israel Envoy Denies
Plot to Kill Nasser

Zeev Levin, Israel Ambassador
here, vehemently denied a re-
port spread by Combat, a mass
circulation newspaper, alleging
the existence of an Israeli
"plot" to have Gambal Abden
Nasser assassinated when the
United Arab Republic President
visits Cyprus next month.
