NEW YORK (JTA) — Five
youths, 11 and 12 years of age,
were arrested for trying to set
fire to a synagogue in the Bronx.
The boys, whose names were
withheld because of their age,
were charged with juvenile de-
linquency and released in cus-
tody of their parents pending a
hearing in Bronx Children's
Court.
Police said the boys had set
fire to a pile of newspapers and
dried leaves on the porch of the
synagogue because they had
mistakenly thought the rabbi,
Isaac Gottlieb, had destroyed
a small but they had built in a
nearby yard. Neighbors put out
blaze before it could do any

On July 4, 1776, the Declara-
tion of Independence, written by
Thomas Jefferson, proclaimed
freedom for the United States of
America. Just 50 years after that,
on July 4, 1826, Thomas Jeffer-
son breathed his last, but he had
written a message to be read at
the semi-centennial celebration of
that year in which lie expressed
the hope that July 4th might
come to be internationally cele-
brated. He envisioned it as a
kind of universal holiday of free-
dom.
• At bottom, all holidays are for
victories of freedom. What is
Passover but a celebration of
the gaining of freedom, and the
other Jew i s h holidays — how
about them? In connection with
Sukkot, the Torah specifically
mentions that it too . is remem-
