Hitler's Second Book Restricted by Political Factors, Says U-M Historian ANN ARBOR — Publication and circulation of a little known, newly discovered sec- ond book by Hitler is being restricted by political factors, a University of Michigan his- torian suspects. Associate Prof. Gerhard L. Weinberg traced Hitler's manu- script to the World War II Records Division of the Nation- al Archives in. Alexandria, Va., in 1958. Called simply "H itler's Zweites Buch" ("Hitler's Sec- ond Book"), it was written by the Nazi leader more than 30 years ago and hidden from the world. It is his only known book besides "Mein Kampf." Weinberg edited the German language volume, which was published last week in Germany. Publication followed a year's delay involving "real and imagi- nary" legal and political com- plications, according to the U-M expert. The f i r s t printing was limited to 5,000 copies—most of which already have been sold. Weinberg has received no assurances that any more copies will be printed. • The German publisher, Deutsche Verlags - Anstalt in Stuttgart, has been "limited" by the Bavarian state government to publication in the German language only, according to Weinberg. Bavaria is a state within the Bonn Republic. "Because the same Bavarian government is currently trying to prevent the appearance of an abridged English version of `Mein Kampf,' Hitler's first book, it may be that there are political considerations at work," Weinberg suggests. The Bavarian government has taken over all assets of the Nazi party's publishing house, the Eher-Verlag in Munich, and therefore claims control. of all Eher copyrights, he explains. "The newly discovered book, like 'Mein Kampf,' explicitly proclaims Hitler's intention to make war on France and later on Russia. But the new book adds to this a subsequent war with the U.S., Weinberg says. "Perhaps there are some people in Germany who are so co cerned about the impact other current news • story Germany's world prestige they prefer the world n reminded of the way in wars of aggression for prominent part of Nazi tions from the very begin In a detailed introduc statement to the 225-page v ume, Weinberg explains the history of the document, why it was written, why Hitler prohibited publication, and why it should be published now. He also provides exten- sive footnotes to the text. Weinberg started to trace the manuscript in 1949 when he learned that Hitler wrote an- other book besides "M e i n Kampf" and that Hitler never meant to publish it. T h e information Weinberg collected made it possible to identify the book in 1958 in the World War II Records Divi- sion of . the National Archives. When the manuscript, believed to be the only existing copy, was made available to the pub- lic in 1959, Weinberg. began studying the work to see if it was Hitler's. -And so it proved to be. "The document was kept in the Na z i party's publishing house until May, 1945, and then taken- over by the U.S.," berg explai "E ce cates a t H. wrot he book a r 1928 rman election. "What Hitler s n this book is relatively " ar to the- basic `Mein Kampf' and is speeches in the 1930's and 1940's which shows how little Hitler's views developed," the U-M historian notes. In addition to Hitler's favor- ite themes, such as race deter- minism and the importance of Eastern Europe to Germany and the like, "Hitler's Second Book" contains a few variations. Hit- ler's advocacy of a war against the U.S. after his European em- pire was built is one example.
