Pope Tried to Aid
Doomed Jews,
Jesuit Asserts

ROME, (JTA) — The late
Pope Pius XII, head of the
Holy See during the Hitler era,
had tried to save Slovakian Jews
from deportation to the Nazi
death camps, an article in the`
Civilta Cattolica, official organ
of the Italian Jesuits, asserted
in its latest issue.
.
The importance attributed to
the article, written by a well-
known priest, Rev. Fiorello Ca-
valli, was pointed up by the
fact that Osservatore Romano,
Vatican official organ, devoted
an entire page to reprint it.
In general, large sections of
the Catholic press here, unof-
ficial as well as official, have
been paying much -attention to
the Jewish problem since the
Eichmann case started garner-
ing world-wide attention.
While most of the more re-
sponsible Catholic press is
Sympathetic to the sufferings
of the Jewish victims of the
holocaust, there are some
Catholic papers that have
used the Eichmann trial as
an opportunity to spread anti-
Semitic doctrines. Such ex-
pressions however, are in
newspapers which more re-
sponsible Catholics consider
part of the "fanatic fringe."
According to Civilta Cattolica,
Pope Pius XII called the Minister
of Slovakia to the Vatican in
1942, when the deportation of
the Slovakian Jews was an-
nounced, and insisted that the
orders be revoked.
Further -steps to save the re-
mainder of the Slovakian Jews,
70,000 of whom had already
been deported by that time,
were reportedly taken by Pope
Pius XII in 1943.
After the Nazis invaded Slo-
vakia, in 1944, Rev. Cavalli
stated, the Pope made one final
effort, "with particular atten-
tion to the lot of Jews in Slo-
vakia and Hungary, and nothing
was left undone or untried to
bring them to comfort."
In addition to reprinting
the Civilta Cattolica article,
Osservatore Romano itself
continued to discuss the Jew-
ish problem and the. implica-
tions of the Eichmann trial.
In an article signed by the
initials of the organ's editor-in,
chief, Raimondo Manzini, the
plea was voiced that not all
Gentiles be accused of anti-
Semitism, while the evils done
by some Christians are recalled
in connection with the Eich-
mann trial.

Ben-Gurion Tells Ame can Rabbis
He Doesn't Favor To 1 Separa •
of State and Religio in Isra 1

JERUSALEM, (JTA) —Prime
Minister David Ben-Gurion en-
gaged in a lively discussion
with members of the Rabbinical
Council of America which con-
cluded its conference here July
30, charging one American
rabbi of "chutzpah" (audacity)
and shouting "libel" in re-
sponse to a challenging ques-
tion from his audience.
The Prime Minister declared
he did not favor complete
separation of state and religion
in Israel at the present time.
He said his stand was based on
the premise that national unity
had to be preserved in an
Israel beset by enemies.
When a rabbi asked Ben-
Gurion about his attitude to-
ward Kashrut, he termed the
question an impertinence,
adding that it was a personal
matter. He said that while he
was a non-observant Jew, he
favored the continued rab-
binical control in Israel on
questions of personal status
until the bulk of the newly
arrived Sephardic Jews be-
come integrated.
When he was challenged re-
garding allegations that reli-
gious Jews were being dis-
criminated against in Israel, he
shouted "Libel" and charged
the Hatzofeh, daily newspaper
ublished by the R eligious
a r t y, with distortions. The
atzofeh, in an editorial, paid
bute to Premier Ben-Gurion
the country's leading politi-
1 figure, but warned him
ainst "assuming the mantle
setting the tone for the ethi-
al values of the Jewish
eople."

Dr. Lilje said that even the
great leader of the Reforma-
tion, Martin Luther, in his later
years was not free of anti-
Jewish attitudes. He expressed
the hope, however, that "vul-
gar Christian arguments" still
prevalent among members of
the church would soon be over-
come by "strong positive ele-
ments."

BONN, (JTA)—A prominent
West German Protestant cler-
gyman admitted that the church
had at times played a part in
the development of "anti-Semi-
tic attitudes."
Appearing on a "Meet the
Pr ess" television interview,
Bishop Hanns Lilje said: "Un-
fortunately it cannot be denied

63 Years of Existence

PITTSBURGH, Pa., (JTA-
An Orthodox congregation in
McKeesport, which has been in
existence for more than 60
years, became the first Conser-
vative congregation of the com-
munity.
The congregation had been
accepted for membership by the
United Synagogue of America,
national association of Conser-
vative congregations.
The Tree of Life Congrega-
tion, which was organized as an
Orthodox synagogue in 1898,
began instituting changes in the
services in 1950 which were
more in line with Conservative
practice. Among these were the
establishment of mixed seating
arrangements and the recitation
of portions of the services in
English.
