Rules King James ble OK for Reading in Schools of Kentuck FRANKFORT, Ky., (JTA)- Kentucky Attorney General John Breckenridge expressed an official opinion that the King James version of the Bible was not sectarian and that there- fore it was not unconstitutional for it to be read in public schools.. He so informed Mrs. E. S. Wood of Elizabeth, Ky., who had sought his opinion on such reading in public schools. He said that Kentucky law required the reading of the Bible in pub- lic schools and that the law had been upheld by the Ken- tucky Court of Appeals. He added that the U. S. Supreme Court has never ruled on the question of whether such Bible reading violates the constitutional requirement of church-state separation. He said a majority of state courts had upheld such read- ing, either alone or accompanied by a recitation of the Lord's Prayer or the singing of hymns or both. The Attorney General said another basis for these rulings was that "any other constitu- tional objection is removed by excluding conscientiously ob- jecting pupils from attendance." He listed states in which courts have made such rulings as Ken- tucky, Colorado, Iowa, Minne- sota, Pennsylvania and Texas. Say Catholic Hospital Church Parley in Berlin in Italy Baptized Babies Urges All Germans to Help in Building Israel without Parents' .O.K. ROME, (JTA) — Nuns in some Italian hospitals conduct- ed by Catholic organizations have been baptizing newly born babies "without explicit authori- zation by the parents," accord- ing to a complaint printed in La Luce, the official publication of the Italian Waldensian Church. The Waldensians are said to compose the world's oldest Protestant community. While the complaint did not mention Jewish parents and babies spe- cifically, it was understood to relate to practices affecting not only Protestants but Jews as well. According to La Luce, the practice of baptizing newly born infants without the authoriza- tion of parents has been espe- cially noted at the Maria Vit- toria Hospital in Turin. BERLIN, (JTA) — A state- ment calling upon all Germans to "help build the State of Is- rael" was adopted here by the 10th German Evangelical Church Congress. The Congress was attended by 100,000 Protestants from East and West Germany. About 10,000 of them participated in the Jewish-Christian Relations Group of the Congress. - The resolution concerning Is- rael stated: "We Germans are obliged to do' everything we can to help build Israel, to strengthen peace for the people of Israel, and also to strengthen the peace of Israel's Arab neighbors." Another resolution affirmed that "no person who took part in the preparation or execution of the persecutions practiced by the Hitler regime should be allowed to hold high office in Germany."
