United Nations Economic and
Social Council, in 1950, em-
powered its secretariat to col-
lect material regarding the race
problems and to give it the
widest possible diffusion. The
collected data has been incor-
porated in a most informative
book, "Race and Science, which
has been published by Colum-
Ma University Press (2960
B'way, N. Y. 27).
Harry L. Shapiro has con-
tributed two valuable studies to
this volume—"The Jewish Peo-
ple: A Biological History" and
"Race Mixture."
In the first of the series of
essays in the book, Juan Comas,
who wrote on "Racial Myths,"
discusses also "The Jewish
Myth."
Other topics dealt with and
their authors are: "Race and
Society," Kenneth Little, "Race
and Culture," Michel Leiris;
"Race and History," Claude
Levi-Strauss; "Race and Biol-
ogy," L. C. Dunn; "The Signifii-
cance of Racial Differences,"
G. M. Morant; "The Roots of
Prejudice," Arnold M. Rose;
"Race Relations and Mental
Health," Marie Jahoda; "Race
and Psychology," Otto Kline-
berg.
Stating that anti-Semitism to-
day resorts "to the myth of a
Jewish race in -an attempt to
justify itself and to provide a
pseudo-scientific • cloak for its
political and economic motives,"
Comas states that "the type re-
garded as typically 'Jewish' is
actually very common among
the peoples of the Levant and
the Near East, though most of
these people are not Jews and
never have been, either in re-
ligion or in other aspects of
their culture." He traces earlier
aspects of anti-Semitism by
stating:
"Anti-Semitism, as a social

and political attitude, infect-
ing whole States in some in-
stances and extensive sectors
of the population in others,
and defended to a greater or
lesser extent on religious and
economic grounds, is a long-
standing antagonism of which
samples are found far back in
history. To indicate its per-
sistence, we may quote such
instances as the mass expul-
sion of the Jews from Spain
in the 15th century, the seg-
regation of Jeivs in Christian
Europe during the Middle
Ages, the Dreyfus case in
France, the notorious pogoms
of Jews at various times and
in various parts of Eastern
and Central Europe, and the
use for world-wide propa-
ganda of the spurious 'Proto-
cols of the Learned Elders of
Zion,' with which it was
sought to exacerbate anti-
Semitic feeling among the
masses."

Pointing to extensive inter-
marriages and to mixing of
races, stating that "it is obvious
that all Jewish communities are
of mixed stock whatever the
country in which they reside,
since, even if they were segre-
gated at certain epochs, these
measures could never be
strictly, not for long, main-
tained or complied with,"
Comas writes:

"There is no foundation for
the claim that there is a
Jewish race; it is a biological
myth affording no valid basis
for an anti-Semitic attitude."

Shapiro's outline of the bio-
logical history of the Jewish
people is a highly scholarly
essay that embraces every ele-
ment of subject, past and pres-
ent. He enumerates reasons for
Jewish survival and he asserts
that "as a people conscious of
their distinct tradition and of
their existence as an entity,
only • the Egyptians are older
than they."

of Jewry, their Chosen People
