It is evident from the main
titles that Rabbi Lewis has cov-
ered a vast variety of subjects,
that he has dealt with noted
personalities (Kaufman Kohler,
Henrietta Szold, Simon Dub-
now, Josephus, Freud, Max
Nord a u, Ahad Ha-Am and
others) and that he concerned
himself with the major issues
in Jewish life.
His book contains reviews of
important Hebrew works and
deals with major religious
themes, including the Sabbath,
and daily problems confronting
Jews.
In his discussion of the Rus-
sian issues, he .expresses confi-
dence that "Jewry will surely
survive the Soviet tyranny,"
and he refers to the Biro-Bidjan
scheme as a "fraud."
With reference to the holo-
caust, he expresses his horror
over . what had happened and
describes his experiences in the
concentration camps and the
shock of revisiting Auschwitz.
Rabbi Lewis believes in the
inevitability of a religious re-
vival in Israel to be led not by
rabbis but by laymen.
Dr. Lewis at present is rabbi
of the Progressive Synagogue
of Brooklyn.
