OTTAWA—Louis Rasminsky,
53, took office Tuesday as Gov-
ernor of the Bank of Canada,
the highest government post
ever held by a Jew in Canada.
The position is comparable to
the chairmanship of the power-
ful United States Federal Re-
serve Board.
R a smin s k y's appointment,
which had been i n d i c a t e d
earlier in the struggle betwee
the Tory government of Pri
Minister John Diefenbaker
James E. Coyne, who resig d
the post, was announced M
day by the bank's Board
Governors. The appointment
was approved by the Federal
Cabinet.
Rasminsky, an authority on
international finance, had been
a deputy governor of the bank
for six and-a-half years. His
seven-year term of office as
governor dates from Monday.

The West German Govern-
ment last February set a reward
of 20,000 marks ($5,000) for Dr.
Mengele's capture. There have
been several reports that Men-
gele was seen in various parts
of South America since the end
of World War II when he fled
from Germany.
Mengele had been hunted for
many months, after his disap-
pearance from his former hide-
out in Argentina.
Mengele, known as the Ausch-
witz "Angel of Death," was the
physician who had acted as the
selector for the Nazis at Ausch-
witz. His job was to select from
among the Jewish victims at the
death factory those to be sent
to the gas chambers while
others were designated by the
physician for labor in
camps.
