THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS — Friday, July 21, 1961 — Hasidic Jews Win Rights to Own a Village in N.Y. Editorial • Editorial Appeal for Unity (Continued' from Page 1) our community so, seriously that it will require not a beth din, not a traditional Jewish conciliation court, but a, Murphy to decide what is right or what is wrong on the Sabbath, then it will be a sad day for our people. And if, as a result of such a controversy, there will be a threat to the unity we have cemented among elements in Detroit Jewry — out of differing opinions that involved Orthodoxy and Reform,' Zionism and assimilation, advocates of a Hebrew 'educational syste and the minimalists who were satisfied with the lea in Jewish learning — then the threat to our cooperati efforts will be even greater. • It .is against the danger of such disunity that t appeal is directed to our community. , It is in behalf of the retention of our spirit of - unit that we plead with all elements in Detroit Jewry at this time. * While the hearings involving the Sabbath issue already are set for today, in Judge Murphy's court, it is not too late to act in defense of orderly negotiations, in support of traditional Jewish conciliatory methods, for the protection of the solidity of our communal life. We have deplored the dragging of an internal Jew- ish issue into our civil courts. Even such regrettable action can be defended. There are on record numerous instances in • which Jewish issues were resolved by decisions of non-Jewish judges. It is preferable that internal Jewish issues should be resolved by Jews in accordance with our traditional practices. But it can be argued that, if and when necessary, some matters can be taken into non-Jewish courts. Even so great a schol as Saadia Gaon went to the non-Jewish Caliph in controversy over an ethical matter with the Exilar the Judaeo-Babylonian community, David ben in the tenth century. The Sabbath issue itself has its many side ought to be some justification for high level programming. For generations, devout Jews meeting in synagogues, in all lands, studying, Jewish law, reviewing the Pirke Avot, the Ethi Fathers, on Saturday afternoons. If our syn regardless of their denominational differences, announce that they were re-instituting the tradit studying and discussing the - Pirke. Avot on Satu afternoons, we would acclaim them for such creativ efforts. We have yet to hear about any of our synagogties reverting to such practices. It is, therefore, too much to ask that a secular Jew- ish Center should undertake a program. aiming at such high standards. But we can hope that our Jewish Com- munity Centers may embark on programs similar to it We agree that it was a grave error for our Jewish Center to open its facilities on the Sabbath with its • health club program. It would have made it difficult for anyone to protest against Sabbath programs if they were to be cultural and spiritual in nature. Because such a program is possible, we reiterate that a compromise over the issue is not out of the realm of possibility, and we plead with the contending groups to strive for conciliation and to meet amicably to discuss alteration of the present policy. * * SPRING VALLEY, N.Y., (JTA) —An attorney for a community of Hasidic Jews in Ramapo dis- closed that the community had obtained State Supreme Court approval of its long legal fight to incorporate f New e na village and e villa: is named Square. VOTE FOR Kathryn Rubiner Ginsberg * Our concern is over the danger to our unity, as a result of the bitterness that has been instilled in the debates over the issue. It has already been hinted by several — we 'are thankful that they are only a handful — that their griev- ance now is against not the Jewish Center but against the Jewish Welfare Federation and the Allied Jewish Campaign. It is such unreasonable involvement that should shock the entire community into an effort to avoid unnecessary conflict that may split us asunder. We have labored for many decades to create unity in our midst, and disruption of it must not be permitted under any circumstances. It is in the interest of a perpetuated communal solidity that we plead for abandonment of external court tests and for resort to conciliatory efforts to solve the grave Center Sabbath issue. We are convinced that a compromise is possible and we earnestly plead for it. Adenauer Pledges Aid to Israel After Reparations Pact Expires BERLIN, (JTA) — Chancellor conditions.
