Mr. and Mrs. Shacket Die in
Plane Crash; Funerals Today

Charles Silk Dead at 93

Charles Silk, a long-time resi-
dent of Detroit and co-founder
of the Army-Navy Goods Store
before the Depression, died July
17 at the age of 73.
Mr. Silk, 9327 Cloverlawn,
came to Detroit 38 years ago
from McKees Rocks, Pa., where
he was president of the Bull
Moose Order, a fraternal or-
ganization. He also formed the
first organization to hold religious
services there.
Originally from Poland, Mr.
Silk came to the United States
at the age of 21. After sending
for his six brothers and sisters,
he was head of the family, spend-
ing a number of years in Balti-
more, Md. (His first teacher of
English was Henrietta Szold,
founder of Hadassah.)
Mr. Silk leaves a son Herbert
of New York; three daughters,
Inez, Mrs. Morris Mendelson and
Mrs. Lewis Gurwin; eight grand-
children and 11 great grand-
children.
