Hebrew School on a Summer Day— Elaine Jo Schweitzer
Work, Play,L
Lots
o s of Fringe Benefits to Wed in December

By CHARLOTTE HYAMS
Gone are the days when
err
Hebrew summer school meant
bored students and floored
ti teachers . . . spitballs zinging
through the air and a hundred
similar crises sending recalci-
Te, trant youngsters._ into the hall.
There've been some changes
made.
Take any day of the week,
Monday through Friday, to
eavesdrop on the typical ele-
z .mentary
class at the Esther
Berman branch of the United
Hebrew Schools. With but few
exceptions, they're an eager
ti bunch
of youngsters . . . and
they're learning Hebrew.
In fact over 500 elemen-
tary school students spend at
H.
least eight hours of study a
week during July studying
Hebrew grammar, history,
Bible, customs and cere-
monies.
There are three groups in
this department. Some 200 chil-
dren participate in the informal
educational program Monday
through Friday: two hours of
study following morning pray-
ers, an hour and a half of
sports and other activities like
arts and crafts, music, - or
drama; and the "fringe bene-
fits": a "kabbalat shabbat"
luncheon every Friday after-
noon and swim outings twice
weekly.
The second group in the ele-
mentary department is com-
prised of about 100 students
doing makeup work. Theirs is
a more rigorous week than that
of the average student: three
hours of study a day. But by
fall they'll be able to rejoin
their classes.
Certain advanced. students,
numbering around 41, attend
special classes at Adas Shalom,
spending three hours of con-
centrated study daily. Their
only reward is the promise of
double promotion.
In addition, Hebrew school
students 'approaching Bar Mitz-
vah age are. offered brushup
sessions, including the oppor-
tunity to conduct morning
services.
TZIPORIM OR PRACHIM?
If there are any hardships
involved in • giving up one
month of their vacations to
Hebrew study, the youngsters'
faces don't show it. For exam-
ple, in Mrs. Naomi Tukel's Class
of six- and seven-year-olds, a de-

the enthusiasm of the students
is no less. There are 54 attend-
