Joel David Wolfsohn
Dies in Washington

WASHINGTON, (JTA)—Joel
David Wolfsohn, 60, president
of the Jewish Community Coun-
cil of. Greater Washington,. and
a former U. S. Assistant Secre-
tary of the Interior, died of a
heart attack while attending a
family reunion in Gary, Ind.
Wolfsohn, a native ' of Chi-
cago and newspaperman there
in his youth, became an at-
torney. In 1934, he came to
Washington-and assumed duties
as executive secretary of the
National Power CommiSsion,
forerunner of the present Fed-
eral Power Commission.
During the Hitler era in
rope, Wolfsohn left the Govern-
ment to serve in London - as
European director of the Amer-
ican Jewish Committee. He di-
rected that organization's work
in aiding Jewish refugees in
post-war Europe and was the
Committee's Washington repre-
sentative in 1949 and 1950.
He later became Assistant
Secretary of Interior and served
in that capacity until 1953.
Former Secretary of Interior
Oscar Chapman, under whom
Wolfsohn served, said that "he
was one of the most conscienti-
ous public servants and most
loyal men I ever knew."

Dr. Hillel Bavli

published in Palestine in 1938;
"Adereth Ha Shamim" (Man-
tle. of Time), published in Is-,
rael in 1955, "L'Rahela (To -
Rahela), "Ruchot Nif Gashot"
(Encounter of Spirits), and
"Niginot Aretz" (Melodies of
the Land). He was noted for
the translation into Hebrew of
such works as Charles Dickens'
"Oliver Twist," (1942), and
Shakespeare's "A ntony and
Cleopatra" (1953), for which
he won the Lamed Prize in
1954.
Dr. Bavli also wrote in Eng-
lish. In addition to a collected
volume, "Essays in Literary
Criticism," there have been ar-
ticles in many periodicals, and
two recent volumes "Essays in
Hebrew" and "Some Aspects
of Modern Hebrew poetry,"
both -published in 1958.
He , was the author of the
definitive article, "The Mod-
ern Renaissance of Hebrew Lit-
erature" which appeared in
"The Jews: Their History, Cul-
ture and Religion," edited by
Dr. Louis Finkelstein and pub-
lished by • Harper Brothers.
A frequent contributor to the
Hebrew periodical Hadoar, Dr.
Bavli was president of the He-
brew P.E.N. Club (Poets, Es-
sayists and Novelists) and as-
sociate editor of the Matz He-
brew Classics.
He leaves his wife, Rahela
Bar Ardon, and a son, Samuel,
both of 900 W. End Ave., New
York.
Funeral services were held
Friday at the JeWish Theologi-
cal Seminary, New York. Inter-
ment was in Israel.
