Soncino Talmud in 18 Volumes
The Babylonian T a 1 m u d,
fundamental work of Judaic,
thought, has been recreated in
a new 18-volume edition of the
renowned English translation
by Soncino Press of London.
The first four volumes of the
beautifully produced work of
scholarship are now available
to American readers.
L. M. Blockh, managing direc-
tor of Soncino, in the United
States to introduce the new
edition, said:

possible the publication of the
complete Talmud in 18 volumes,

10 More Hebrew. Day
Schools to Open
NEW YORK, (JTA) — Ten
more Hebrew day schools will
be opened next September in as
many cities, it was announced by
Samuel C. Feuerstein, president
of Torah Umesorah, the National
Society for Hebrew Day Schools.
The new schools, according to
Feuerstein, will bring the total
of such primary, all-day schools
organized • for the 1960-61 and
1961-62 academic years to 24.
There are now in the United
States, he reported, a total of
278 Hebrew day schools at the
primary, junior high and high
school levels, with an enrollment
estimated at 51,000 pupils. The
total, he declared, was "un-
doubtedly" higher, since many of
the schools do not report to any

'M' Prof Writes on Sultan's Physician in Hebrew Journal
.
The new issue of Hebrew Medi-
cal Journal, of which Dr. Moses
Einhorn of New York is the edi-
tor, marks the inauguration of
the 34th year of continuous pub-
lication. Written in Hebrew and
English the journal has played
an important part in the foster-
ing of a inedical literature and
terminology in the language of
the Bible.
The section "Historical Medi-
cine" of the current issue pre-
sents a scholarly treatise by El
azar Birnbaum of the Univers
of Michigan entitled "He
Yaqub, Physician to Sultan
hemmed the Conqueror (1
1481)." The author' discusses
role of the Jews in the natio
and court life of the Ottoman E
pire during the 15th century, wit
particular emphasis on the posi-
tion and influence of the Jewish
physicians during that period. An
early Turkish source under the
title "Group of Jewish Physi-
cians" lists 68 Jewish doctors as-
sociated with the palace as com-
pared with 21 Moslem doctors.
