Israel Publishes
Report on Slums

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
Ministry of Labor published a
study demonstrating that a
widespread belief that most of
Israel's slum dwellers are im-
migrants from Oriental countries
was inaccurate.
The study showed that 42 per
cent of slum dwellers had emi-
grated from Europe, and a simi-
lar percentage from Asia and
Africa. The remainder were
Israeli-born. The survey also
showed that more than half of
the slum dwellers seemed re-
signed to their conditions and
many more were satisfied with
those conditions.

Editor, The Jewish News:
The recent letter from a
number of rabbis to the leaders
of the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion and the Jewish Community
Center reveals a dreadful dis-
regard of the democratic tradi-
tions of American and Jewish
life. They wish to achieve by
imposition what cannot

If all Jewish cultu

tivity is religious, then there is
no reason for a community
center, and the be-all and end-
all of Jewish life is the sylia-
gogue. The fact is that a signi-
fiCant segment of Jewry is not
in religious institutional life,
and the existence of the center
and other non-religious organi-
zations show that we need other
than religious organizations.

Center's Sabbath Program in Brazil.

Editor, The Jewish News:
I had the occasion to be in Mendelson's Host
the neighborhood of the Jewish
Center on Saturday. I decided
to enter the Center and see
What type of Sabbath program
had been instituted which, I
hoped, would in some manner
provide justification for the
Sabbath opening of the Center.
My findings were: There was
absolutely no acknowledgement
of the fact that it was the
Hebrew Sabbath. A regular
athletic and swimming program
was in progress. The director
of activities for that day said a
cultural program was planned
for the fall.
' So the opening of the Center
on Saturday involved seculariza-
tion and desecration of the
abbath by the Center.
