'Rabbi Silver's Views Disputed by Detroiter; Court Action Deplored Rabbi Joseph Elias, in a state- ment to The Jewish News, chal- lenged the use of Rabbi Eliezer Silver's _name in defense of the opening of the Jewish Center's facilities on Saturdays. Rabbi Elias maintains that Rab- bi Silver had approved of Sab- bath programming provided it was supervised by a special "Mashgi- ach." He calls the use of Rabbi Silver's name in the present De- troit situation "gross intellectual dishonesty." His statement fol- lows: It seems gross intellectual dishonesty to use Rabbi Eliezer Silver's name in defense of something which he never per- mitted. Rabbi Silver approved Sab- bath programMing upon strin- gent conditions to be super- vised and enforced by a spe- cial "Mashgiach." These condi- tions, I understand, cannot and will not be observed in our local center. How, then, can ad- vocates of Sabbath program- ming use Rabbi Silver's name? I myself, in line with the Union of Orthodox Rabbis and the Rabbinical Council Of Amer- ica, utterly disagree with Rabbi Silver. I believe that setting conditions on Sabbath, program- ming is completely unrealistic. But let those who do not want to sail under Rabbi Silver's flag, at least do so in toto. bringing you banking convenience closer to home at W.
