Reform Rabbis, N CRAG Condemn Birch Society at Their Conventions

NEW YORK, (JTA)—Reform
rabbis denounced the J-ohn Birch
Society for repeating "some of
the worst evils of MeCarthyism,"
called for mediation of United
States-Cuban relations, named
Federal aid to public education
America's greatest need, and
asked the abolition of the House
Committee on Un-American
Activities.
The rabbis acted during the
72nd annual convention of the
Central Conference of American
Rabbis.
The convention also heard
Israel's first Ambassador to the

law."
The rabbis also called for an
end to "delay" in the matter of-
medical care for the aged; asked
for stronger efforts _ to insure
civil rights; and scored the
efforts of "organized groups" . to
suppress freedom of speech
through exercise of the polders
of censorship.
The delegates voiced strong
support for President Kennedy's
plan for assisting - and improving
public education, coupled • with
vigorous opposition - to the use of
Federal and state fund grants or
loans to private and parochial
educational institutions. The con-
vention opposed the granting of
government funds to individual
students attending private or
denominational schools. The con-
vention protested the bottling up
in the committee of the Pres-
ident's aid-to-education bill.
Rabbi Sidney L. Regner, execu-
tive vice-president of the CCAR,
told the assembled rabbis that
their -organization has grown by
200 members over the past
decade, although this "has not
been due to any desire for
bigness in itself." He reported
that the Central Conference in
the past year had distributed
more than 100,000 prayer books,
hymnals and other -CCAR
publications.
Rabbi Bernard I. Bamber-
ger declared in his presiden-
tial address that "the general
line" taken by the current,
country - wide observance of
the centennial of the Civil War
"seems nothing less than
alarming."
The Civil War Observance,
Rabbi Bamberger said, is "a kind
of pageant, glorifying a romantic
episode in so carefully balanced
a way that no one's sensibilities
shall be ruffled. The war was in
vain, the celebration is a blas-
phemy and disgrace, if a century
late, the Negro's right to full
equality may still be limited by
prejudice enacted into law ' or
perpetuated by custom."
Bamberger proposed that
"there ought to be one central
theme and objective to this cen-
tennial celebration—the elimina-
tion of all official, legalized
racial discrimination before the
observance ends in 1965." -
He charged that American
leaders, both conservative and
liberal, are trying to fight social
and economic threats to free-
dom and attempting to oppose
Communism's "planned program
of world conquest, - with ideas
that are 30 to 60 years old.",
