THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS — Friday, June 23, 196 1 Trial of Eichmann Indicts Allies as Well as Germany - Goldmann (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) LONDON — Dr. Nahum Gold- mann declared Tuesday night that the Adolf' Eichmann trial findings were not only an indict- ment of the German people for what they did during the Nazi regime but also an accusation against western democracy for failing to respond to repeated warnings before and during World War II. Speaking at the silver jubilee dinner of the British Section of the World Jewish Congress, Gold- mann told a distinguished audi- ence that many warnings were given to the Allies, including the letters of Dr. Chaim Weiz- mann, but all of them were turned down. Weizmann's letter, appealing to the Allies to bomb the Auschwitz murder camp and the railways leading to it, was disclosed by the prosecution, in the Eichmann trial. Goldmafin's audience included a number of members of parliament and other British leaders. "I am deeply convinced that if these warnings had been re- sponded to, hundreds of thous- ands of Jews could have been rescued at the beginning of the war, but they all perished," he said. He issued a dramatic warning to the present Jewish world against "self-optimism and over- optimism," and added, "we have learned a lesson from our mis- takes but if we are going to commit the same mistakes it will truly be a crime. "We are living- in the most dangerous times of our century. The century is most unstable and German. States to Parol Teen Swastika Daubers BREMEN, (JTA) — A con- ference of provincial ministers of the interior decided to grant special "political parole" to youths jailed for neo-Nazi activi- ties during the series of swastika daubing incidents which began in December, 1959. The ministers decided on the amnesty to avoid making "politi- Cal martyrs" of the youthful offenders. likely to remain so despite ten more possible summit meetings. Any thinking that the Jewish situation in today's world is stable and safe is pure nonsense. Discussing the Israel _situation, he expressed full agreement and admiration for Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion "for his cour- age in telling the people of Israel about the constant danger which embraces Israel. Peace with the Arabs is as remote as it was 13 years ago and the whole Jewish world must commit itself to a tremendous effort no less than the one needed to establish the State of Israel." He said such an effort was essential to enable Israel to con- solidate its defense and economy. German Parliament Urged to Force Nazi Judges to Resign BONN, (JTA)—The legal com- mittee of West Germany's Bund- estag, the Lower House of Parlia- ment, proposed a bill calling upon all judges and prosecutors, who served in the Nazi judicial appa- ratus in cases that ended in the death penalty, to resign "volun- tarily" within one year. According to the framers of the measure, there are 72 judges and state prosecutors in the West Ger- man judiciary now who were in- volved, during the Hitler era, in court cases that ended in the death penalty for those accused by the Nazi regime. A constitutional amendment was being prepared here for in- troduction in parliament after next September's general elec- tions, authorizing more stringent, punitive action against all judges and state prosecutors found to have shared responsibility in any inhuman Nazi death sentence. Under the amendment, members , of the judiciary thus found guilty of responsibility will be dismissed without pensions, and will have to face trial. The issue distributed was that of May 15, which devoted nearly all of its four pages to the Eichmann case. The distri- bution apparently was planned to -coincide with the visit to the United Nations of Italian Prime Minister Aminton Fanfani, when scores of correspondents were present. The distribution, however, took place hours after Fanfani had departed, and only a handful of correspondents re- mained. McGinley is not accred- ited to the United Nations.
