Simon Marks New Jewish Baron

THE DETROIT JEW ISH NEWS — Friday, June 23, 1961 —

BY S. J. GOLDSMITH

LONDON—Sir Simon Marks,
the 72-year-old chairman and
managing director of Marks and
Spencer, Ltd., was made a peer
of the realm in the new honors
list, published on the Queen's
birthday (the official one) on
June 10. He was recommended
on the Prime Minister's list for
public and charitable services,
and becomes a baron, the lowest
rung in the hierarchy of the
peerage. He will be known as
Lord Marks of Somewhere or
other—a peer's title must be
connected with some country
place, or "seat," even if he was
born in an apartment in Man-
chester, as the new Lord Marks
was.
Marks is the first half of
Marks & Spencer, one of the
best known, and most patron-
ized chain stores in the world,
an institution in Britain. This
is not to say that Lord Marks
has not made his own, individ-
ual and distinctive mark on the
life of our generation, both on
the general and the Jewish
level. But one could not write
about Lord Marks without tell-
ing something about Marks &
Spencer. It would be rather like
writing about Lord Montgomery
without mentioning the Eighth
Army, or about Lord Beaver-
brook without mentioning the
Daily Express.
