Diane Mellen Weds Study of Jewish Fertility
Melvyn Rubenfire Feature of '61 Year Book

MRS. MELVYN RUBENFIRE

Diane Mellen, daughter of
Dr. and Mrs. Hyman S. Mellen,
was united in marriage at a
candlelight ceremony at Temple
Israel on June 18 to Melvyn
Rubenfire, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Harry Rubenfire.. Rabbi Leon
Fram officiated.
The bride wore a gown of
white silk organza over silk taf-
feta. The open neckline, short
sleeves and fitted, bodice was
appliqued in hand corded Alen-
con lace. Garlands of the match-
ing lace was appliqued on the
dome-shaped, floor-length skirt
falling into a chapel train. Her
tiara of tiny pearls was attached
to a two-tiered fingertip veil of
white silk illusion. ,
- Barbara Stollman, sister of the
bridegroom, was ma t r on of
honor. Bridesmaids were Norma
Friedman, Miriam Korn and
Jacqueline Sweet. Michael Gold-
man served as best man. Seat-
ing the guests were John Mel-
len, David Broner, Terry Wein-
garden, Paul Gold and Harvey
Lash.
Upon their return from a
Florida honeymoon, the newly-
weds will reside on James St.,
Oak Park.

Aside from the great value
inherent in the many direc-
tories and factual data incor-
porated in the American-Jewish
Year Book, the annual record
for 1961, published by the Jew-
ish Publication Society jointly
with the American Jewish Com-
mittee, contains a number of
very important articles.
A major feature is the study,
"Jewish Fertility in the 'United
States." It shows the rate of\
Jewish population growth in
the U.S. as compared with other
religious and social groups.
The author of the article,
Erich Rosenthal, seeks an
answer to the question whether
the Jewish population in this
country is •likely to shrink,
grow or remain constant, based
on census data and private
studies. He reaches the view
that "it is possible that with
further gains in social and eco--
nomic status the Jewish ferti-
lity level will rise."

While there are some dif-
ferences between the fertility
rate of Jews, Protestants and
Catholics living in urban areas,
the article states, there is a
greater difference in the fer-
tility rate between rural and
urban members of these
groups.
Thus, since more than 96 per-

-

cent of American Jews reside
in the cities, their fertility rate
is lower than Roman Catholics
(78 per-cent urban residents),
and Protestants (55 percent
urban residents) However, the
fertility rate of Jews and Pres-
byterians is almost equal. In
fact the Presbyterian rate is
one percent below that of- the .
Jews.
Another article in the Year
Book, "Two Centuries of Jew-
ish Life in Canada," by Louis
Rosenberg, commemorated Can-
adian Jewry's bicentenary.
Other highlights in the Year
Book include a detailed sum-
mary of the religious issue in

Items in the 500 pages of the
Year Book also cover such sub-
jects as civil rights, church-
state issues, anti-Semitism, reli-
gion, Jewish education, and
the domestic impact of events
in the Middle East.

In a report on world Jew-
ish population, the Year Book
said the total Jewish popula-
tion is estimated at nearly
thirteen million. Of this num-
ber, some 6,450,000 are in
North, Central a n d South
America; about 3,700,000 in
Europe, while Asia has approxi-
mately 2,000,000. Some 540,-
000 lived in Africa and about
68,000 in Australia and New
Zealand. The Jewish population
of the United States is esti-
mated at 5,531,500.

The population of Israel is ap-
proximately 1,880,000 Jews and
234,000 non-Jews. Of the Jewish
population in Israel, nearly 35
percent -is native born. The num-
ber of non-Jews living in Israel
has almost doubled since the
establishment of the State, the
Year Book reported. -

The Year Book states that
there are only nine countries
with Jewish communities of
200,000 or more—the United
States, the Soviet Union, Is-
rael, Argentina, France, Great
Britain, Canada, Romania and
Morocco. Of the 3,500,00Q. Jews
in Europe, approximately 2,-
660,000 were estimated to be
in the Soviet Union and its
satellites. The largest Euro-
pean community other than the
Soviet Union was Great Bri-
tain, numbering 450,000.

In an article on Jew_s in the
Soviet Union, the Year Book re-
ports that official Soviet Census
figures reveal that 470,000 Jews
(about 21 percent of the Jewish
population) said that Yiddish
was their mother tongue. How-
ever, the use of Yiddish is ac-
tively discouraged 7-- unlike the
use of any other language in the
U.S.S.R. In general, official So-
viet policy continued to restrict
Jewish identification. The Year
Book states:
"There are - still no Jewish
schools and no Jewish organiza-
tions (in the Soviet Union). Al-
though there are several provin-
cial theater groups, choirs and
concert ensembles, - there is no
Jewish- theater. While Yiddish
works have been translated into
Russian, there has been almost no
publications of boobs in the Yid--
dish language."
Jewish group life, including re-
ligious life, the Year Book re-
ports, is actively discouraged. Un-
like other religious groups in the
Soviet Union, Jewish congrega-
tions are still not permitted to
create a. central organization.
There is a continuing shortage
of prayer books, prayer shawls,
in fact all religious articles. Im-
portation of these articles is
either barred or discouraged by
the Soviet government.
There is the usual compre-
hensive coverage by experi-
enced observers of Jewish
communities the world over.
The Year Book continues to
record the latest population
statistics, directories of Jewish
organizations and periodicals,
obituaries, and calendars.

First U.J.A. Young
Leadership Mission
to Israel a Success

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
United Jewish Appeal's first
Young Leadership Mission,
which brought 140 young Jew-
ish communal leaders to Israel
for a two-week visit, has been
so successful that the UJA in-
tends to bring over such a mis-
sion every year in the future,
Rabbi Herbert Friedman, UJA
executive vice-chairman, said on
the eve of the mission's de-
parture. ,
During the entire visit, the
young leaders were never ex-
posed to speeches. I n s t e a d,
numerous meetings were held,
during which the members of
the group questioned Israel's
top leaders, including Prime
M i n i s t e r -David Ben-Gurion,
former Premier Moshe Sharett,
Finance Minister Levi Eshkol,
Education Minister Abba Eban,
