JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The recent rift between the Indian Bnei Israel Jewish community here and the Chief Rabbinate, over limitations placed on mar- riages between members of that community and other Israeli Jews, appeared to be nearing settlement with the decision to send an Or- thodox rabbi to India to provide needed religious instruction • to the ancient Indian Jewish com- munity. While marriages between Bnei Israel Jews and other Israeli - Jews are not banned, the Chief . MIDELMAN'S ANGELUS SUMMER RESORT No, North Shore SOUTH HAVEN, MICH. The advisability - of allowing, such marriages was open to ques- tion because the religious mar- riage code practiced by the Bnei Israel community had been dif- ferent from that practiced gener- ally by Orthodox Jews elsewhere, the Chief Rabbinate said. The decision to send an Ortho- dox rabbi to India, resulted from mediation efforts by Dr. Arieh Tartakower, Israeli chairman of the World Jewish Congress, prompted by concern over the issue by Dr. Nahum Goldmann, WJC president. Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Nissim was reported to have indicated during a meeting with New Delhi Jewish leader B. Benjamin, that he would reconsider the marriage limitations if the Orthodox rabbi were sent. to India. Rabbi Nissim said that the rabbi would be able to rectify a situation where the Bnei Israel community was in need of religious instruction. Israel Committee to Draft Policy on Resale of Weapons JERUSALEM, (JTA)—A five- member Ministerial Committee to draft a new arms sale policy for the Israeli Government, so as to prevent foreign governments pur- chasing Israeli arms from using these weapons to help maintain colonial regimes, was named here by Israel's Cabinet. The issue grew out of recent unfounded reports—denied both here and at Bonn — that West Germany had sold to Portugal some of the "Uzi" submachine- guns bought • here by Germany. Portugal had allegedly used these Israeli weapons to help suppress the independence movement in Angola, Africa. The new committee, proposed by Prime Minister David Ben- Gurion, consists of Finance Min- ister Levi Eshkol as chairman, and includes Foreign Minister Golda Meir; Minister of the Inte- rior Moshe Shapira; Yitzhak Ben- Aharon, Minister of Transport and Communications; and Minis- ter of Health Israel Barzilai. SHOW PLACE 0 Compensate- Austrian Jewish Refugees Living Abroad VIENNA, (JTA) — Jewish victims of the Nazi regime in Austria who- now live abroad will be eligible for compensa- tion from funds in Austria for victims of Nazi persecution, to- ward which the West German Government has agreed this week to contribute about $25,- 000,000, to be applied to sup- plement compensation pay- ments by the Austrian Govern- ment. Jewish refugees of this. cate- gory far outnumber the num- ber of Jews entitled to com- pensation who still reside in Austria, it was pointed out. The arrangement to secure pay- ments for Austrian • Jewish persecutees who no longer live in Austria was reached as a result of talks between Dr Nahum Goldmann, chairman of the Conference on Jewish Ma- terial Claims Against Germany and Chancellor Konrad Aden- auer and other _West German officials. The sum of 100,000,000 deut- schemarks (about $25,000,000) out of the 321,000,000 deut- schemark overall settlement be- tween West Germany and Aus- tria will be applied to supple- ment compensation payments by Austria to victims of Nazi persecution. Austrian legisla- tion to compensate Jewish and other victims of the Nazi re- gime, adopted earlier this year, Was contingent on a West Ger- man contribution to the com- pensation funds.
