Morocco Removes Another Jew,
Zaoui, from High Government Post

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire to
The Jewish News)

PARIS—The removal of an-
other Jew from a high post in
the Moroccan Government was
reported here Wednesday from
Morocco.
M. Zaoui was dismissed with-
out any reason being given from
his post as director of the Con-
servation Fonciere in the Moroc-
can Finance Ministry. His dis-
missal was followed by a cam-
paign against him in the extremist
Moslem journal, Al Oumal, which
has accused him of Zionist affilia-
tions.
Earlier this year, Meyer Tole-
dano was removed from his post
as judicial counselor to the Moroc-
can Foreign Ministry.
In another development, un-
easiness was reported developing
among Moroccan Jews after fur-
ther study of the 17 articles of
the new "fundamental law"
signed by King Hassan on
June 2.
One particularly disturbing ar-
ticle is number 15, which stresses
that Morocco will not only re-
main faithful to the Arab League
under King Hassan but will
strengthen its attachment to the

League. It was noted that Moroc-
can journals have been urging
full Moroccan collaboration in all
plans of the League.
While the new law does not
nullify the relations of equality
of rights of Jews and Moslems
in Morocco, it does not use the
term "Jew" -at all. Articles one
and two of the law, in fact,
stress the fact that Morocco is an
Arab and Moslem country and
that Islam is the official religion
of the state.
While article 15 also re-
affirms the acceptance by Morocco
of the United Nations Charter,
Moroccan Jews have been won-
dering when freedom of move-
ment for Moroccan Jews, in ac-
cordance with the UN Charter,
will be reestablished.
