NEW YORK --- "Freedom for
the pursuit of thought" was de-
scribed Wednesday by a Ford
Motor Company scientist as that
"secret ingredient" which gives
the United States the edge over
the Soviet Union in the science
race, and will ultimately lead to
an edge in military strength.

Commencement Was
a Big Family Affair

.

NEW YORK—Yeshiva Univer-
sity's 30th annual commence-
ment, held June 15 at the Dan-
ciger Campus, was a family af-
fair.
A set of 21-year-old identical
twins — Shoshana and Miriam
Poupko, now Mrs. Joel Feldman
and Mrs. Yechezkel Babkoff, both
of Brooklyn — received their
bachelor's degrees while their
infant children looked on.
The former residents of Phila-
delphia became mothers 19 days
apart early in their senior years.
In order to insure that her
daughters would receive their
degrees and to permit them to
return to class as soon as possi-
ble, Mrs. Sonia Poupko of Phila-
delphia cared for her grandchil-
dren from their birth until final
examinations were completed.
Secondly, a doctorate, a mas-
ter's and a bachelor's degree
were awarded to three members
of the Wohlberg family of BrOok-
lyn. Rabbi Harry I. Wohlberg,
50, received the doctor of He-
brew literature degree, his 23-
year-old son Jeremiah received
the master of Hebrew literature,
degre and his 20-yar-old son Saul
received the bachelor- of arts de-
gree. The youngest son, Mitchell,
16, will graduate from Rabbi Jo-
seph High School in Brooklyn on
June 26.

any repression, constriction or
strangulation of that life-giving
bread of the scientist—intellec-

being conducted by the National
Academy of Sciences for the De-
partment of Defense, is an alum-
nus of Yeshiva College. He re-
ceived the honorary degree of
doctor of laws at the University's
30th annual commencement exer-
cises yesterday on the Danciger
Campus.
The Ford scientist compared
Soviet science to that of the U.S.
Citing his own field of specializa-
tion — magnetism — Goldman
noted that "they are indeed sadly
lacking 'in competence, breadth
and quality."
He went on to state that he
had confirmed this fact in other
areas of basic science, namely,
that the Soviet technological ad-
vances belie their status with
regard to basic science.
"In proportion to their input
— their investment in people,
space, facilities and talk," he
continued, "important discov-
eries, innovations or outstanding
new ideas are today relatively
lacking."
He noted that even in that
area which catapulted the Soviet
Union into technological promi-
nence — space exploration and
rocketry—the Russians were be-
hind this country in the scien-
tific efforts and implications.
"Add to this the fact that all of
the important scientific discov-
eries on space have_ come from
us, not from them," he stated.
