Dr. Herbert J. Blooin to Leave on Mission of Mercy to Vietnam Tuesday

By CHARLOTTE HYAMS
There's a dentist in Detroit
who's pretty sure he can help
mend U.S. prestige abroad.
But oral surgeon Dr. Herbert
J. 'Bloom's r' an to serve three
months on the S.S. Hope ship is
only part of that remedy. For
while he is aiding the poverty-
stricken peo:de of Southeast Asia,.
he will be surveying the possi-
bilities of an exchange pr gram
with Sinai .Hospital for an "Insti-
tute of Advanced Education in
Dentistry".
Bloom, chief of the Sinai and
Mt. Carmel oral surgery divi-
sions, will leave Detroit Tuesday
for his trip to Saigon, Vietnam,

The desirability of post-de-
gree work at Sinai can be ex-
plained partially by the unique
Cleft Palate Habilitation
Center which Bloom has di-
rected for six years.
Although. there are two or
three diagnostic and research
centers in the U.S. that deal with
this severe facial deformity, Sinai
has the only service center which
combines the skills of oral sur-
geon, physician, dentist, psycholo-
gist and speech correctionist un-
der one roof and available to the
patient at no charge.
Obyidusly his work in this
field will be -of great assistance

aboard the Hope Ship, "but only
if the people really want me to
help them. I will not force my
Western ideas upon them and say
`This is the right way to cure.' "
As for his going abroad to
disease -- ridden, trouble - infested
Vietnam, "my family and friends
think I'm crazy. But I'm looking
forward to it."
"You see," Bloom admitted, "I
don't really like administering
an office (he heads a staff of
dentists at Bloom Associates,
Third and Lothrup), and serving
on the Hope Ship will give me the
chance to do something I've al-
ways wanted to do."
For three months, Bloom
will be forced to abandon not
only his practice, but hospital

The Institute, still in the

local needs.
Bloom has processed applicants
from every continent in the world
(Israel and the Arab countries
have been significantly represent-

officials including Vice-President
Lyndon Johnson, has written a
stack of letters "that high".
But still no go. "Everybody in
