The strongly worded, joint statement on the "freedom riders" warned that "mobs con- spiring to commit racial vio- lence must be stopped." The organizations stressed that "only if our own system of govern- ment is based essentially on the religious virtue of justice, can we expect to build effective defenses against an external enemy and promote in the world the great ideals of peace, liberty and justice."
