Jewish Community Center Elects
Charles H. Gershenson President

Charles H. Gershenson, prom-
inent local builder and land de-
veloper, was. elected president of -
the Jewish Community Center.
He succeeds Samuel Frankel.
Chosen to serve with Gershen-
son were Mrs. Harry L. Jackson,

Gersnenson has been a leader
in the Jewish community for
many years. He was elevated to
the Center presidency after serv-
ing). on its board and as its treas-
urer for the past six years. He
also is treasurer of the Jewish
Family and Children's Service, is
a member of the board of gov-
ernors of the Detroit Jewish
Welfare Federation, • and served
as chairman of the special gifts
division of the 1961 Allied Jew-
ish Campaign.

Groundbreaking cer emonies
will be held 4 p.m. today for
the new Louis Tendler Elemen-
tary School, named in memory
of the late newspaperman.
The $300,000 school, bounded
by Vernor, St. Jean, Gladwin
and Howe Court, is one of the
new concepts in school design
adopted by the Detroit Board of
Education in the current -build-
ing program. It is a nine instruc-
tional area, one-story structure
with a central pitched roof and
clerestory lighting over the multi-
purpose section of the school.
To be completed in fall of
this year, the. school will accom-
modate 288 students.
