leader, who feels the trial "
going to prove a great mistak
which will backfire. It . . wil
introduce strife and quarrels int
the Jewish camp and will lea
to the vituperation and vilifica-
tion of the Jews.' "
Those who collaborated to win
their freedom may be implicated,
Grossman fears.
As for the fate of Eichmann,
Matthews writes:
"Argument is rife all over
Israel. Some favor handing him
over to Poland, which says it
would like to try him, and would
make short work of him—or to
any other country, and there are
several that would like to get
their hands on him." Others think
he should be set free to wander.
"Most Israelis, I think, would
like to hang him as high as Ha-
man. But one young Israeli vet-
eran said to me that Eichmann
should be imprisoned for life,
because then he would become
penitent and would write a great
book," the truth about the Nazi
persecutions.
Matthews calls the trial "a
moral bomb" to "serve notice on
the world that the Jews, whom
neither the ancient Romans nor
the modern Nazis succeeded in
destroying, and who do not ex-
pect to be destroyed by the
Arabs either, have decided to
join forces with the rest of the
human race—or at any rate with
that part of it that wants to re-
main human."
The setting of the trial "was
a deliberate act designed to
assert or to re-establish Jewish-
ness not only as self-respecting
. . . but also as an admittedly
admirable and admired way of
life."

JERUSALEM — The Knesset
Tuesday unanimously approved
the first reading of a bill which
provides for the abolition of exit
visas now required for all Israelis
and permanent residents desiring
to travel abroad. The bill, intro-
duced by Interior Minister Moshe
Shapira, will become effective'
Oct. 15 if it passes a final read-
ing in the House.
The 1,500-.000-pound annual
revenue, now derived from fees
charged for the issuance of exit
visas, will probably be replaced
by an increase in the travel tax.

son A. Rockefeller was awarded
