Center Board Votes to Open Its Facilities on Saturdays The board of directors of the Jewish Community Center, by a vote of 27 to 8, last- week decided to open its facilities on Saturdays. While the type of program to be introduced on Saturdays 'is yet to be formulated., it has definitely been decided to commence the Saturday programming at 1 p.m. The board's decision authorizes the Center's staff to include in its Saturday programs the health club facilities. •When a similar decision was made last year, it evoked protests from many quarters, including most of Detroit's rabbis—all of the Orthodox and Conservative and several of the Reform—against it. It was charged that the Sab- bath would be desecrated by programming on Saturdays. Since then, endorsement of Saturday Center programming . by Rabbi Eliezer Silver of Cincinnati, and the commence- ment of Center programming on Saturdays in a number of cities throughout the land, has been used as an added argument by those favoring such a program in support of their proposal. - The Center staff will announce plans for the Saturday programs very soon, it was stated this week. WASHINGTON, (JTA) — The State Department issued a statement emphasizing that "the question of an understanding" between President Kennedy and Israel's Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, as to a "specific solution" of the Palestine Arab refugee problem, "did not arise" during the talk last week in New York between the two statesmen. (Prime Minister Ben-Gurion, prior to his departure from New York for London, told reporters that he had reached "a very large measure of agree- ment" with President Kennedy with regard to the solution of the Arab refugee problem and that President Kennedy had a plan for solution of this problem. He said if Arabs would accept this plan, "there will be a solution.") The State Department, in its statement, referred to a communique issued on May 10 by the United Nations Conciliation Commission, and emphasized that the U.S. Government has consistently supported the UN resolutions Which en- visage the solution of the Palestine refugee problem through repatriation or compensation. "It will fully support moves made by the Conciliation Commis- sion in accordance with them," the State Department declared. At the same time, the statement revealed that President Kennedy, in his talks with the Israel Prime Minister, "stressed the importance of Israel's cooperating with such efforts as may be initiated by the UN Palestine Conciliation Commission." The State Department's statement, issued by Lincoln White, its presS- secretary, reads: "On May 10, the United Nations Conciliation Commission for Palestine issued a com- munique reporting that it had met that day to consider steps which could usefully be taken in the fulfillment of its responsibilities pursuant to the General Assembly resolution — the pre- cise number of it is 1604 (XV)—of April 21, 1961, and relevant previous resolutions. These 'resolutions envisage the solution of the Palestine refugee problem through repatriation or compensation. "The United States Government has consistently supported these resolutions, and will fully support moves made by the Commission in accordance with them. Now, in their brief .Continued on Page 7 State Department 'Piously' Espouses Right of 'Boy' Eichmann to Spread Anti-Semitism Here By MILTON FRIEDMAN (Copyright, 1961, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) WASHINGTON—The United States Immigration Service may investigate abuse of a visa issued • to Adolf Eichmann's 25-year-old son, Nicolas, who is emulating his father by making appeals to religious bigotry. Nicolas Eichmann is in Washington. He is the arrogant holder of a B-1 and B-2 combination U.S. non-immigration visa. The visa authorizes him to "work" as well as travel in the United States. He told the Washington press that his father had "saved the Jews who are now living very healthy, very rich, maybe. Will they testify? No, no, you can't get this out of a Jew . . . Jews don't behave like citizens in America . ." The announced purpose of the Eichmann visit is to write a book and propa- gandize on behalf of his father. Yet visa regulations require visitors to refrain from any activities prejudicial to the national interest or injurious to American foreign relations. In a request addressed to Secretary of State Dean Rusk, asking for an investigation of Nicolas Eichmann's abuSe of his visa privileges while visiting in this country, I. L. Feuer, national commander of the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A., this week stated that Eichmann's son is in this country presumably to write a book for which he is being compensated by Drew Pearson. Detailed Story on Page 5 The State Department sought to justify the visa. Officials stressed that a 25-year-old "boy" cannot be held responsible for "alleged" World War Two be- havior of his father. The father is now on trial in Jerusalem as a major Nazi war criminal. American hospitality was extended to Nicolas Eichmann at a time when the State Department boycotted the Eichmann trial by refusal to send an official diplomatic observer. With one other exception (England) all nations with em- bassies in Israel sent observers to the trial. An inquiry by this correspondent ascertained that the State Department was aware of Nicolas Eichmann's anti-Semitic and pro-Nazi line. Yet the Department piously espoused "free speech" and "free press" considerations. This contrasted with the Department's attitude toward such freedoms during the recent Cuban.. fiasco. A visa, under federal law, is a privilege, rather than a right. It may be rescinded if the visa holder acts against the public interest. United States immigration officers months ago deported. a Canadian for adherence to George Rockwell's so-called "American Nazi Party.". An alien student was ousted after demonstrating against the House Un-American Activi- ties committee hearings in San Francisco. The visas of Cubans were revoked for criticizing the American role in the Cuban invasion disaster. Earlier, 1959, the State Department had denied visas to members of the Batista family in a bid for Castro's friendship. Hundreds of leftists and suspected Communists of many nationalities have been barred. But an open door apparently exists for Nazi apologists. It is ironic that the same U.S. Consular office in Buenos Aires, Argentina. that so quickly ap- proved the Eichmann visa, once denied a visa_ to a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany. Some years ago, this refugee woman was asked to state her "race" and "ethnic" classification. She explained that she considered herself white or Caucasian. The Consular Official was displeased, impatiently insisting: "You're really a Jew, aren't you? That is your race." There was some discussion about a U.S. consul's right to inquire into religion—an overt violation of the First Amendment. The application was "filed for study." Perhaps she is still waiting. Great damage was done to America's image by native racist agitators in Alabama and elsewhere. A "Nazi Party" in the United States has been a nuisance to federal authorities and police of various cities. Despite its tiny membership. the Nazi group here has been useful to Moscow propagandists who seek to portray America as "fascist." The discretion of the State Department leniency to another racist agitator, whether or not a son of Adolf Eichmann, has been questioned. A related issue emerged involving American hospitality to Andrija Artukovic, pro•Nazi Crotian police head named in the Eichmann trial as a collaborator responsible for the murder of 69,000 Yugoslav Jews and many non-Jews. Artukovic is today living luxuriously in southern California. He maintained he was a mere "anti-Communist." A United States commissioner ruled against extradition on grounds of "insufficient evidence." But a non-Jew who headed the U.S. Araty Intelligence group in the Balkans during World War Two testified; "Artukovfc ordered- Jews and Serbs to wear yellow ribbons on their sleeves to be identified."
