Smokier Announces $14 Million
Home Development in Southfield

The largest residential land
purchase in the his tory of
Southfield was announced by
Bert L. Smokier, president of
Bert L. Smokier and Company.
The land, which covers 155
acres, is located on 11-Mile Rd.,
one-quarter mile east of the
Lahser cut-off from Northwest-
ern Hwy., • and will be de-
veloped for Beacon Square, the
newest Smokier community.
Altogether, there will be over
500 h o m e s, situated on lots
ranging in width from '70 to
80 _feet. In order to preserve
the spacious c o u n t r y atmo-
sphere, the homes will have a
40 foot set-back from the
streets, and the streets them-
selves will be at least 33 feet
wide.
Developments for - Beacon
Square include the construc-
tion of a separate storm sewer
with gutters at the curbs of
the streets, a separate sanitary
system, 5-foot • sidewalks, and
De t r o i t water. According to
Smokier, costs for the land and
development will be $2,500,000.
Final figures for the homes
and land in Beacon Square will
be upwards to $14,000,000.

five bedrooms, and two or more
baths.
The home will be constructed
with Owen-Corning "Comfort-
Conditioned" fiberglas insula-
tion in the ceiling and walls.
In addition, Beacon Square
homes are Bronze Medallion
homes •. . . offering plenty of
electric current and a minimum
of five electric built-in appli-
ances.
"We've taken our research
findings and have come up with
something really fine," said M.
L. Berman, vice president of
Bert L. Smokier and Company.
"We've incorporated the re-
search findings into each of the
homes we're building in Beacon
Square. And when we run into
a snag . . . it's back to the
research for the final decision,"
said Berman. "For instance, we
found that today's home buyer
resents optional extras . • .

Experts to Study Problem

Israel Concerned with Increase
in Number of Saturday Workers

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire to
The Jewish News)

JERUSALEM — The govern-
ment of Israel was disclosed
Wednesday to be planning a
study by experts in Jewish reli-
gious law for means of coping
with the problem of a rising
number of Saturday workers re-
quired by the rapid pace of intro-
duction of modern machinery.
Giora Josepthal, Minister of
Labor, told the Knesset'

He said the increase in appli-
cations for Saturday work per-
mits had been rising because of
the constant flow of new ma-

chinery into Israel's economy.
The government has decided to -
name three experts on Halacha
as an institute for industrial re-
search in relation to Jewish re;
ligious law.
The institute's task will be to
advise the cabinet on ways of
reducing the number of work-
men required on the Sabbath.
The labor minister disclosed the
and the plan in reply
