more than 10,000—the key cen-
ter of the Lachish development
area, servicing the surrounding
farming villages with its cotton
gin and spinningh•mills.
The Lachish plain is 30 miles
wide. It stretches from the Medi-
terranean Sea on the East to
Jordan on the west. Until 1954,
It was a barren wasteland. Today,
it is a bustling area of 56 agri-
cultural villages.
The Lachish project introduced
for the first time the concept
of a regional "service" center:
Introduced by Prime Minister
David Ben-Gurion, the plan
called for veteran settlers to act
as instructors of the new immi-
